iTunes Review

With Islands' fourth studio album, Nicholas Thorburn distances himself even further from his roots as the frontman for indie pop band The Unicorns. A Sleep and a Forgetting is a mostly melancholy musing on the end of his marriage and the adversity that followed. “In a Dream It Seemed Real” sets the tone, as Thorburn’s voice tries to keep cool amid recollections of moments leading up to the divorce. Following the similarly sullen “This Is Not a Song,” things pick up a little in “Never Go Solo,” where a bouncing piano gives the tune’s verses some buoyancy that sets it up for an angry chorus. “Can’t Feel My Face” is another standout; its upbeat tempos and slightly sunny melodies contrast lyrics that reject mysterious metaphors for a more dry and direct lyrical approach: “I miss my wife/I miss my best friend every night/I miss my home/I miss my own bed and my old life.” Of the bonus tracks, “Grey Funnel Line” stands out, with Thorburn singing like Chet Baker.

love it

I've listened to this album well over a dozen times, and certain songs many more times than that. It's a sweet, heartfelt concept album based around the end of a relationship.. but not just any relationshp.. ("I loved a girl, and I will never love again"). And just as everything Nick touches, this album is unique, packed with clever lyrics, lovely melodies, and plenty of references; as well, it's an extrememly honest album ("Nick, if you ever learn, it never shows"), and it sets in the most sincere way.. the last bonus track, Grey Funnel Line, is so beautiful, with such a wonderful metaphor, it's just out of this world!

Fabulous album

Lot of great songs on this album, a range of melodies and influences at work, you'll enjoy it over and over and won't get tired of it. I haven't really been llistening to this band since Return to the Sea, but they still have the same quirky lyrics and solid musicianship. Check them out...
