A rock and roll slap in the face
54-40 is probably best known for such acoustic gems as I Go Blind. I know them for this set of music that can only be described as a rock and roll slap in the face. I was absolutely taken aback when I first listened to this album by the sheer ferocity of some of the tracks. Beyond the outsider leaves me breathless with its guitar and vocal onslaught. Radio Luv Song is definitely not a love song, but a rockin' ode to individualism. Now, after countless listens, what strikes me is the melodies and intelligent lyrics behind all of the hard edges. These songs endure because they are all so listenable and because they have very interesting things to say. They don't become forgettable the way a lot of hard music does. Go out and get slapped by Smilin Buddha Cabaret and you will find yourself going back again and again....
