iTunes Review

After a decade in the limelight, Lifehouse remains defiantly untrendy on Smoke & Mirrors. Singer Jason Wade’s nervous charisma is once again applied to songs that capture anxious emotional states and fleeting glimpses of transcendence. Many of Smoke & Mirrors’ songs sketch dead-end moods and dysfunctional relationships, with the hope of release hovering just beyond the horizon. If tracks like “Halfway Gone,” “Had Enough” and “It Is What it Is” are colored with melancholy, their choruses provide enough bursts of energy to dispel the gloom. The album’s high points include “Nerve Damage” (a slinky number with a dreamy guitar interlude) and “By Your Side” (a piano-based number with an empathetic message). Lifehouse’s post-grunge roots are exposed here and there, especially in the edgy “All In” and the angry “Here Tomorrow Gone Today.” For the most part, though, the band prefers to insinuate and emote rather than flex their rock muscles. Lifehouse stays true to its trademark sound, keeping its words ambiguous and its music hook-laden and consistently accessible.

Amazing album

Every song on this is great, especially "It is what it is" . Im surprised it has not been released as a single yet.

Get the Deluxe Edition!

Though this is a good album, I absolutely recommend getting the Deluxe Edition. The four extra songs included with it are truly the highlights of 'Smoke & Mirrors' (perhaps with the exception of "Near-Life Experience"), and should most certainly not be left behind.

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Led by singer/songwriter Jason Wade, Lifehouse emerged in the early 2000s with a commercial blend of pop/rock melody and throaty, post-grunge vocals. Wade, who originally tagged the band Blyss upon its inception in 1996, was raised by missionary parents in a variety of locales. He eventually settled in Los Angeles with his mother and took a keen interest in songwriting. Bassist Sergio Andrade lived next door, and the two spent hours in Wade's garage, fine-tuning their original compositions and laying...
