Album Review

So This Is Goodbye involves no input and no apparent residual fingerprints from original member Johnny Dark. On their second album, Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus depart completely from 2-step and late-'90s Timbaland twitter, polishing their sound to such an extent that absolutely no detectable scuffs are left. Improbably enough, the thematic springboard for the album appears to be "When No One Cares," a Frank Sinatra cover that flickers and hisses like a malfunctioning neon sign. Greenspan, whose vocal ability has improved remarkably, puts a typically fragile spin on the Sammy Cahn/Jimmy Van Heusen composition, though you can picture him on the brink of cracking up at the thought of this insufferable, pitiful character — this underscores a semi-subliminal undercurrent of self-deprecation that carries through most of the album. Fragments of lyrics from the song inspire "Count Souvenirs" and "Like a Child," two other cases where Greenspan croons as if he were leaning against a bank of synthesizers, tie undone and hair disheveled, on-stage at the Sands' Copa Room. (Rest assured, Taco this ain't.) Over half the album consists of slowly unfurling material that projects a cool sense of comfort, as if Chicago house pioneers Larry Heard and Frankie Knuckles were brought in to transform jubilant Italo-disco and foppish synth pop into downcast club tracks and creeping torch songs. The placid grace of the album is interrupted only by the crunchy snap of "In the Morning" — the only song that breaks a sweat — which makes like a non-album single plopped in the middle of the album for no good reason (à la those old CD issues of the XTC catalog that slapped the bonus tracks in the middle, rather than at the end). Otherwise, this is a make-out album destined to be played most often by loners who, for whatever reason (a crippling breakup, a fear of human contact, the snowman melted, etc.), are only able to commit the act in their minds.

Amazing what some boys can do...

Like a retro-futurist soundtrack to a yet-to-be-made noir film, "So This Is Goodbye" takes the listener for a ride on some lost highway of sleek electronic soundscape via the nostalgic route. On this cross-continental ride of sounds, the Boys pick up the pop sensibilities of Visage, OMD, Alphaville and the Pet Shop Boys, along with the minimalist production values of Kraftwerk, and all held together with the breathy and airiness vocals similiar to Air. This is an impressive album, with standout tracks, "The Equalizer", "First Time", "Count Souvenirs", "FM", and the AMAZING "In The Morning"--sleek, minimal and sexy.

Who Knew

Actually...you would expect the Junior Boys are from Montreal, arbiters of cool that they are. I heard this group for the first time recently on the "Mother Ship" (CBC) and was gobsmacked to find out they were from Hamilton. Go figure - great electronica - with vocals to boot - and they hail from a place famous for things like meatball subs. Hamilton is cool!

Sparkling Retro Synth-Pop Diamonds

Jeremy Greenspan and Johnny Dark have created a remarkable album, which is both exceedingly fresh AND highly reminiscent of the best synth-pop of the 80s. Despite the reliance on electronic instrumentation, Greenspan and Dark have produced a phenomenally heartfelt and soulful collection of catchy songs - songs that stay with you long after the last clicks and bleeps of the album have finished. This work recalls the best work of synth-popper Vince Clarke, back in the days when he was heading a very young Depeche Mode and Yazoo, with more than a small nod to early Vangelis. The music also is a reminder of the beautiful music produced by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark circa "architecture and morality", before OMD became just another pop band. Perhaps it's the Canadian influence, but Junior Boys also seem to owe something to their Canadian synth-pop counterparts of a 20 years ago, Strange Advance. All of these references aside, "So This Is Goodbye" still sounds incredibly contemporary and refreshing. With this album, Junior Boys provide a compelling case to twist the old addage "Everything old is new again" to "Everything old is REnewed again". Well worth purchasing at any price.

Biography

Formed: 1999 in Canada

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '00s, '10s

A Hamilton, Ontario-based electronic pop group, Junior Boys began as a duo with its duties split between Jeremy Greenspan and Johnny Dark. Influenced by a number of music sectors — including arty synth pop, minimal techno, U.K. garage, and contemporary hip-hop — the two made a demo with no positive results. Dark opted to leave the group (he would go on to release solo material and form one half of the duo Stereo Image), but former Warp employee Nick Kilroy heard the songs and became interested...
