iTunes Review

Chad Van Gaalen isn’t your ordinary singer-songwriter. Sure, he writes on keyboards and guitars, but from there he diverges from the usual path in unexpected ways. Each of his previous solo albums were culled from a rich catalog of existing home recordings but with his third album, 2008’s Soft Airplane, he sat down in his home basement studio with an old tape machine and boom box and deliberately put together this eclectic mix of lo-fi acoustic strumming and exotic synthetic keyboard magic. “Rabid Bits of Time” recalls the lonesome whine of Neil Young. “City of Electric Light” sounds like a man barely surviving the 4 a.m. hour, while “Old Man + the Sea” channels a primitive 3-dimensional world where the electronics haven’t quite been mastered and are likely to short out at a crucial moment. Van Gaalen loves these sudden distortions and interruptions; much in the spirit of acoustic Pink Floyd, there is always an unexpected room noise or ambient touch to bolster or upset the placid surface.

Excellent Adventure

George Carlin travelled back in time to make sure the Wyld Stallyns passed history and could make their album which held the key to world peace and ultimate truth. I'm pretty sure this is what it sounded like.

Ecstasy

Chad VanGaalen brings this fresh and genuine album. Stirring pieces all written with such sensibility, and surprising variety. Willow Tree might be one of the most heartbreaking song I have ever heard, and I've heard a couple ones. While TMNT Mask is likely to enliven dancefloors, Bones of Man is a composition of nostalgia, something that makes me think of a joyful, but yet lonely, balad. I'm officially in love.

Who knew acoustic guitar and electronica had such good chemistry?

Chad VanGaalen combines smart lyrics, soothing guitars, and upbeat keyboards to write a masterpiece CD that we know as Soft Airplane. This album will comfort you as you are doing your homework, feeling a little sad, or trying to fall asleep. Heck, it will comfort you at all times, so buy it!
