iTunes Review

Rod Stewart has been blessed with one of pop music’s most natural voices. In his youth, he sang hard. Middle age found him softening up. His later days find him looking back through songbooks for tunes where he can easily add his golden throat without too much wear and tear. It isn’t quite the force of nature it once was; Stewart occasionally sounds tentative. “It’s the Same Old Song” kicks uptempo, but Stewart takes it cautiously, blending into the mix of backing vocalists just when it’s his turn to take things higher. The always tough “Higher and Higher” from Jackie Wilson simply can’t be met but is infused with Stewart’s warm deliver anyhow. Stevie Wonder’s “My Cherie Amour” adds Wonder on harmonica while Stewart coasts. Anyone expecting Stewart to issue a musical challenge will be disappointed, but for those who enjoy hearing a familiar friend put his touch to old favorites, Stewart’s takes on Smokey Robinson’s “Tracks of My Tears” and “You’ve Really Got a Hold On Me” are like a letter home.

So much better than the mandated rock covers album

This may not be his best album to date but I like it very much indeed. Love You've Really Got a Hold on Me and the JH duet. This is Rod singing songs he loves I think and in great voice.
I have many of the originals too but Rod always brings something new to the table with every song and his inimitable voice. Hopefully Clive let the artist have his own way for once with this.

King of Soul

I bought the originals and compared. Rod has done justice to most of these songs. They took a little while to grow on me. Know I can't stop listening to them."Rod has proven time and time again that he is the King of Blue Eyed Soul". I hope there are more Soulbooks to come.

This is Mowtown not Soul

I expected more Otis, Sam Cooke, Percy Sledge, maybe a little soulful Marvin Gaye... I have these songs on Mowtown Chart Toppers. Rod has gone the easy way delivering pop rather than a good SOUL album

Rod Stewart may have begun his career as a respected singer, yet that critical respect eroded as he got older, as he became more concerned with stardom and adult contemporary songcraft than the rock music that launched him. While he has recorded some terrible albums — and he would admit that freely — Stewart was once rock & roll's best interpretive singer as well as an accomplished songwriter, creating a raw combination of folk, rock, blues, and country that sounded like no other...
