What Pink Martini seems most passionate about is its unique musical vision, drawn from international sources and rooted in a sort of ‘70s-era naïvete. Here PM’s guiding spirits Thomas Lauderdale and China Forbes combine Latin dance tunes (“Ohayoo Ohio”), Italian pop ditties (“Tuca tuca”) and French cabaret numbers (“Ou Est Ma Tete?”) into a tasty soufflé, light yet substantial. They do equally well with American idioms, dipping into Adult Contemporary sounds from the Nixon Years for the title song and invoking the heyday of Tin Pan Alley with “Over the Valley.” The guest vocalists range from NPR correspondent Ari Shapiro on the droll “But Now I’m Back” to nonagenarian ranchera singer Chavela Vargas on the mournful “Piensa en Mi.” Pink Martini wrestles with cuteness and wins on a multilingual rendition of Joe Riposo’s “Sing” (performed with Sesame Street’s Emilio Delgado). All told, this album is a thoroughly appealing creation, a toast to retro pleasures offered with relish and a smile.
