iTunes Review
Stone Temple Pilots initially angered the grunge elite for finding ways to turn the angst into surefire radio hits. The group’s pop appeal while maintaining its harder edges made them that rarest of groups in the ‘90s: one that embraced the rock stardom that other bands professed to hate. Reunited after years of estrangement, STP sound like the perfect hard rock unit. Singer Scott Weiland can punch forth like the rock frontman he so naturally is and the DeLeo brothers provide him with his strongest backing in years. Whether it’s the brash attack of “Between the Lines” or the retro-boogie of “Huckleberry Crumble” and “Hazy Daze,” STP are practically a course in classic-rock history. “Dare If You Dare” has power-ballad scripted onto its pounding sorrow. “Bagman” sounds like a power-pop band turning the amps way up. “Fast As I Can” rocks out like Bad Company and Aerosmith finding their way down the L.A. Freeway. The deluxe edition includes several bonus cuts, including live versions of tracks from the new album and their classic hit “Vasoline.”
Customer Reviews
blown away.
It's like I passed out in my backyard, in the sun, near the pool, wearing shorts and knee-high socks, after drinking too many long island iced teas, and someone attached 30000 helium balloons to my lawn chair, and i floated away, into a hurricane, and proceeded to land in the middle of a girls gone wild shoot, where i got the best hummer of my life. That's how blown away I am.
Refreshing
Glad to see one of the great bands of the 90s back together making music again. Good rock music is so hard to come by these days, this album is just what the music industry needed. Now if only Rage Against the Machine could release a new album sometime soon...
Solid Album
The band took it upon themselves to produce this album, and it sounds great. I'd say it falls somewhere between Tiny Music and Shangri-La. The rockers are classic rock influenced re: Aerosmith and the Stones. Others are more glam rock influenced from the likes of Bowie and Elvis Costello. This is another example of how diverse the band can be and displays their interest in trying new sounds that are an extension of what they've already pursued; This has never been a band to rest on their laurel.
Album highlights, IMO, and in this specific order starting with the best are: First Kiss on Mars, Huckleberry Crumble, Hickory Dichotomy, Cinnamon, and Maver. On second thought, every track is an album highlight.
Downside: Could have done without the live bonus tracks, those just seem like album fillers... would have been better to include b-side tracks instead that weren't supposed to make the cut to begin with.
