Album Review

On their 2009 release Supporting Caste, Canadian natives Propagandhi seem more interested in the challenging prog metal laid down in the Great White North — in the form of such genre giants as Rush and Voivod — than continuing the group's earlier punk-emo leanings. Granted, there are still enough elements of their emo past that they won't be confused with Kamelot anytime soon, as well as having Black Flag/Descendents drummer Bill Stevenson on board as producer. But there's no denying that the members of Propagandhi are quite adept at their instruments compared to other emo bands — especially on such tracks as the album opener, "Night Letters," and "Tertium Non Datur." Supporting Caste shows that Propagandhi are not afraid to expand their sound a bit, but the real question is, how far can they go without befuddling their early fans?

Emo?

Who was allowed to write this review of this album? Where do they get off calling this great Canadian band emo?!!! This is NOT emo.

Winnipeg must be proud, Edmonton sure is.

Very few bands are as thought provoking and engaging as Propagandhi. The suddleties of songs like Human (e) Meat and The Funeral Procession lend the ear back to the Less Talk days, while the song This Is Your Life makes your heart pump like the old days of I-Spy. The Banger's Embrace has an almost Celt-Punk vibe, it's the only track that shows the playful side of the band which was very blatant in the early years of the band. The stand out tracks are Dear Coach's Corner with the two guitar assault in full force and it's as catchy as it is a protest song, the opener Night Letters starts off like a Raised Fist B-Side then it gets swallowed up by Todd's gravely voice and an off tempo war on the ears. All in all it's the first must have punk rock record of the year, if not the only true punk rock record to come out in years.

First of all...

Can someone please tell 'puppetmaker' that iTunes has this really amazing option where you can preview songs before you buy them? Then we can tell them that ghandi is spelt differently then the portion of this band's name is. Good god. I was into Propagandhi hard in high school, like, the 'Less talk...' days. Then I lost track of them. I wish I hadn't. Vocals have come so far (and they were always great) but the range is really there now, the recording is so clean as compared to the old stuff and they still write some of the best hooks in punk rock. Dear Coaches Corner is such a cool song as a Canadian, hockey fan, and someone who follows politics. I'm downloading the rest of the album right now.

Biography

Formed: 1986 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

As one of Fat Wreck Chord's very first bands, Propagandhi have long been going against the grain of not just society, but even their own record label. Initiated by Chris Hannah and Jordy Samolesky, the band of radicals from Winnipeg, Canada, got together in 1989 and eventually played a show with NOFX. After talking with Fat Mike and realizing they shared the same D.I.Y. attitude, the band agreed to join his fledgling label. Ideally, the band would have loved to skirt the entire capitalist process...
