If rock was bran, this muffin would give you the sweats

Matthew Barber and his band, The Union Dues, played the Tongue & Groove in Lethbridge, Alberta this summer. It was two weeks before the release of this album. Aided in part by a sweet throwback moustache, Barber absolutely took over the crowd. The songs from this album were well received live, especially the show-closing dischomage "The Plea" (which inspired an impromptu audience sing-along / mashup with The Stones' 'Miss You'). Now, months after a tremendous live show, the songs survive on their own merits, and hold their own in playlists with a surprising diversity of other artists; be they rock, pop, alt-country, or western. In that sense, Matthew Barber's songs are like the venerable timbit. It goes with just about anything, any time of day is fine. In the Can-Rock, will travel tradition of Joel Plaskett, Sam Robert, Nathan Wiley, Peter Elkas, Matthew Barber is another very worthy addition to your cassette rack. Enjoy.

Amazing Artists, Amazing Album

It is safe to say that Matthew Barber is definately one of Canada's most promising up and coming artists. Every song on this album is beautifully written and so catchy to listen to. Though it doesn't compare to a live preformance it is a suitable substitute. I highly recomend that anyone even considering buying this album do so! I guarantee it will be on repeat all summer long! Best songs, if you have to choose: "Awful Dream" (I love this song), "The Plea" (the simplicity of the lyrics really proves how strong the musical component plays on a songs catchy nature) and "Like Lightning". But your favorites will change with each listen, believe me. Buy it and if you get the chance take in Barber and the Union Dues LIVE you won't regret a minute of it!

INCREDIBLE!! Absolutely incredible.

This is one fun album! It is probably Matthew's most up-beat and rocky. If you like catchy tunes with awesome lyrics, then buy this album! For fans of Matthew Barber, I would highly recommend listening to VINCE VACCARO as well.

Matthew Barber grew up in Toronto on oldies records and Top 40 radio. By high school, he was a classic rock freak, and had embraced indie music by the time he reached college. It was around this time that he started fueling his influences into some furious four-tracking. By the early 2000s, Barber was living in Hamilton, Ontario, where he bought graduate-school coffee with money from local solo gigs. In June 2002 he self-released his debut LP, Means & Ends; it showcased a sound somewhere between...
