Album Review

The Montreal-based husband-and-wife duo of the Besnard Lakes really work some of the old yin-and-yang magic on their debut release The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse. Throughout the eight tracks, the push-and-pull of crunchy guitars versus delicate, stringy instrumentation seems to reflect the dynamic between Olga Goreas and Jace Lasek themselves (with wife Goreas, seemingly the prime instigator for the power chords). It's a slightly indulgent affair, but the only way to get these seemingly disparate qualities to play nice on an album together is to sweat over it — and sweat they did, but not on somebody else's timecard. Utilizing their own studio, Goreas and Lasek could, and did, take plenty of time getting their vision to come through in the mixes, and the ebb-and-flow between abrasive and lilting isn't half as jarring as you might think. It's like a Beach Boys album when it's calm and a Queen album when it's crunchy, but all filtered through what must be one hell of a record collection over at the Goreas-Lasek homestead. ~ J. More Wonderful Music from the Montreal "scene"

The reviewer who gave this 1 star is doing a tremendous dis-service to this beautifully crafted album - Yo La Tengo at their sweetest meets Pink Floyd at a My Bloody Valentine concert. This is the kind of collection that is designed the old-fashioned way, to be played as a set of music from start to finish - download the entire list of songs and play on repeat.

A Modern Classic

Ethereal and expansive, this album carries on the grand tradition of music that takes you to a place that's difficult if not impossible to find on your own. Some use drugs, some use music, some are working on space travel. The wise one listens to The Besnard Lakes.

Pure Genius

Pure genius. Answers the question of what would have happened if Brian Wilson in his "Surf's Up" phase got together with Niko to record Pink Floyd's "Meddle". Having said this, using such nostalgic references does a great disservice to this incredibly well-crafted, stunning and (despite the references) highly original album. A vocal and orchestral gem. A great purchase.

Biography

Formed: 2001 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

The Besnard Lakes raise immediate comparisons to the Arcade Fire, but those are primarily due to accidents of geography and band chemistry: like the Arcade Fire, the Besnard Lakes are from Montreal and led by a married couple. That's largely where the similarities end, because if this Quebecois collective resembles any of its Canadian counterparts, it would be as an unexpectedly effective combination of the Dears' psychedelic pop hooks and the languid space rock ambience of early Broken Social Scene....
