Album Review

As The Fragile unfurls, all of Nine Inch Nails' trademarks — gargantuan processed guitars, ominous electro rhythms, near-ambient keyboards, Trent Reznor's shredded vocals and tortured words — are unveiled, all sounding how they did on The Downward Spiral. Upon closer inspection, there are new frills. The Fragile lives up to its title once the first disc is over. There are some detours into noise but they're surrounded by long, evocative instrumental sections that highlight Reznor's gifts for arrangement. Whenever Reznor crafts delicate, alternately haunting and pretty soundscapes or interesting sonic juxtapositions, The Fragile is compelling. There's no denying that it's often gripping, offering odd and interesting variations on NIN themes. Reznor's music is immaculately crafted and arranged, with every note and nuance gliding into the next.

a masterpiece

this is easily the best album trent reznor has ever composed, along with halos 15 and 16, the EPs released after the fragile. The album has variety, from the simple, progressive, and pounding Somewhat damaged, to the calm, serene la mer and the great below. Fans of the perfect drug and closer will like Starfuckers Inc., and those looking for a more guitar oriented, heavy metal song will enjoy We're In This Together and No, You Dont. The Album contains various other instrumentals such as Just Like You Imagined (with modular and midi synths of course). Trent also adds incredible harmonies in the song Into the void, which has a steady build up, and is one of the more "up beat" songs on the album. One thing that you might notice is that this album is very much about build up, and the tracks really do support one another. i could go on and on, but hopefully that gives you an idea of the great variety on this album. while his other albums like The Downward Spiral (very industrial and gritty), Pretty Hate Machine (electronica, has an 80s sound) and Broken EP (leading into TDS era, industrial heavy metal) are terrific, this one is a master piece full of soothing textures and tones. Highly, highly recommended. - and if you found you liked the fragile, take a look at Still, a short EP. mostly acoustic with some renditions of old material as well as some newer tracks such as And All That Could Have Been (a line from the great below and the title of the live album).

near perfect. the entire album has a sound so dense, so noisy, yet somehow so organic. everyone should own this.

A Number one fan's Number one album

The Fragile is (in my personal and highly critical) opinion, the over-all best NIN album out right now. It shows up the depth and angst of the previous albums and gives us a view of what is to come in terms of the new directions of Trent Reznor. From Pretty Hate Machine to Ghosts I-IV, The Fragile is the Golden era of Nine Inch Nails. I strongly and highly recommend The Fragile.

Biography

Formed: 1989 in Cleveland, OH

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Nine Inch Nails were the most popular industrial group ever and were largely responsible for bringing the music to a mass audience. It isn't really accurate to call NIN a group; the only official member is singer/producer/multi-instrumentalist Trent Reznor, who always remained solely responsible for NIN's musical direction (he was, however, supported in concert by a regular backing band). Unlike the vast majority of industrial artists, Reznor wrote melodic, traditionally structured songs where lyrics...
