Album Review

Let's just say that these boys from South Carolina didn't exactly scrap their plans to conquer the world after their critically acclaimed 2006 debut. The band's sweeping, arena-friendly alternative rock returns on this ambitious follow-up. In the short year since Daylight's release, the band's music made it onto television (The Evidence, MTV's Laguna Beach), movies (Employee of the Month), and at major sporting events (the 2006 World Series). They also toured with Train and Collective Soul, the latter of whose frontman Ed Roland shares producing credits on this album with Rick Beato (Shinedown). Whether deliberately or not, there seems to be a distinct likeness to both of their tourmates' sounds, as Needtobreathe combines Train's mastery of mid-tempo adult alternative with Collective Soul's pulsing, straightforward rock. The group dwells less in the Coldplay/Travis corner of the sonic universe this time, sounding more like After Edmund and early-career Oasis. There is no runaway single like "Shine On," although first single "Signature of Divine (Yahweh)" has its share of rich, sweeping gusto. Now that the cat's out of the bag (i.e. their sound no longer commands an aura of mystery and intrigue), the boys seem to have lost just a touch of their pioneering spirit, buut that cannot distract from the album's strong, approachable rock that plays best when cranked to a "10."

Really are bringin' on The Heat!

I recently got a gift card to the iTunes store, and as I was browsing, I was doubting whether or not the get The Heat. I have Needtobreathe's first album daylight, and was impressed by most of the album, but when I did decide on buying The Heat, I was blown away. This album is beautifully executed. There is great use of an acoustic accompaniment in many of the songs that adds another great dimension to thier sound. And, as usual Bear Rinehart's tremendous and truly diverse voice really adds the edge that is, Needtobreathe. There is something about these vocals, both lead and backup, that seem to take the right turns at the right places and add so much to each track. Vocally, instrumentally and lyrically, Needtobreathe seems to have a level of maturity right from the start, that most bands only achieve after several albums. Especially with The Heat, it has the maturity of albums like Jars of Clay's "Good Monsters" and the smooth flow and feel of bands like Coldplay. I reccomend buying this entire album because you will just end up coming back and wanting more. 5 starts to an already great great band.

JUST A GREAT CD

The Heat follows in a similar vein to Daylight, but the songwriting and structure seems much improved. Incredible songs include, "The Heat", "Streets of Gold", "Looks like Love", "Nothing Left to Lose", "Washed by the Water", "We Could Run Away", "More Time". It is very much a cd you can listen to front to back and not hit a bad song. Just buy the cd, I have no doubt you'll love it.

Amazing Album!

A must download for any music fan. Every song from start to finish is catchy, especially More Time, Washed By the Water and Signature of Divine (Yahweh). I've never heard of this band before and just after purchasing the entire album they were added to the top of my favourites list.
