Upbeat Twang

The Decemberists are at their best when their dark folk rock shines through. This album has none of this. Just a collection of unnecessarily chipper twang folk. A disappointment.

Solid front to back

The last album was something on another level, a rock opera type thing, but this one is just solid tasty folk rock with a mix of country/bluegrass that makes you wanna sway to the down beats and tap to the up beats.

Led by Montana native Colin Meloy, the Decemberists craft theatrical, hyper-literate pop songs that draw heavily from late-'60s British folk acts like Fairport Convention and Pentangle and the early-'80s college rock grandeur of the Waterboys and R.E.M. The band's initial lineup also included drummer Ezra Holbrook, bassist Nate Query, keyboardist/accordionist Jenny Conlee, and multi-instrumentalist Chris Funk.
