iTunes Review

Macy Gray is one of modern R&B’s brightest lights. Her vocals remain as distinctive as ever on her fourth studio album,The Sellout, where she sat down and wrote much of the material herself. Collaborations with Velvet Revolver and Romika add some extra intrigue and Bobby Brown’s appearance on “Real Love” is a head-turning pairing. Without Will.i.am twisting the knobs, the sound settles into its neo-classic roots without a hitch. So any ideas that this might some sort of “sellout,” as the title implies, is quite an overstatement. Gray is in confident voice and that’s all that really matter, because like any great vocalist, from the limited hoarse shouts of Mick Jagger to the smooth heartbreak of Otis Redding and the improvisational wonder of Marvin Gaye and Van Morrison, Gray turns it on with simple tunes such as “Still Hurts,” “Beauty in the World” and “On and On.” She grooves on hip-hop flavored beats, but she’s an old school traditionalist at heart. With a freak flag waving high.
