Album Review
The idea of "drowning in sound" was one that informed Ben Cooper and Alex Kane's musical thinking during the creation of this, their third album as Electric President. Combine that factoid with the fact that "Violent Blue" is how Cooper refers to the ocean and you'll have a pretty good idea of what kind of sound to expect: vast, dark, moist, and often oddly comforting. Consider the album's opening track, titled (suggestively enough) "The Ocean Floor." The song sways in waltz time, like a large sea fan moving with the current. Skeletal, cheap-sounding drums built a rickety structure for an even cheaper-sounding acoustic guitar and a variety of lo-fi electronic sweeteners, and while the description may not sound very enticing, the sonic results are powerfully attractive. "Mr. Gone" features some deeply weird percussion sounds that are clearly acoustic in origin yet sound like alien insects slowly eating a drum set; the singing is quiet, the electronics are softly atmospheric, and yet again the result is quite a bit better than the sum of its parts. The album's title track is its biggest, densest, and most atmospheric; despite its sonic weight the overall effect is gentle and softly cathartic, thanks in part to a combination of self-deprecating vocals and unassumingly soaring melodies. The vocals tend to be buried in the mix, which is just as well with cliché-ridden couplets like "I was made to throw stones and darken doorways/To burn bridges, then fall and sleep it off" floating around. But hackneyed lyrics are easy to forgive when they're couched in music that's this raggedly and sweetly seductive.

Mr. Cooper and Mr. Kane do it again....
I have been an EP fan since S/T (thanks to Kim at Penguin Music in Toronto) and loved everything (including side projects) they've decided to record in their basements. The Violent Blue (is this a dark stab at their all blue toned artwork on Sleep Well album?) starts off with subtle lulls. The first 1/2 of the album feels like the latter half of their S/T album (one of my favourite 1st albums of all time), a slow build while the last half seems to feed off what made me love EP in the first place, wonderfully melodic, poppy, low-fi electronica with Ben's sweet voice soaring above making things feel all warm and fuzzy inside. The Album definitely takes a few listens to appreciate (as i felt with Sleep Well which also started off subtler than usual) the warm build that climaxes at track 6 (The Violet Blue) and moves into more up-tempo country. If you've never heard EP before, start with their first album, S/T (self titled) and work up from there. You'll be an instant fan; guaranteed. Keep at it Ben and Alex and check out Radical Face if you want more and more...
I Love it!!
But I don't understand why the iTunes guys put it into alternative? This is actually electronic music to my mind. Anyway - this is cool music and I love to mix it with my favourite chillout and electronic music tracks which come the following albums:
"Baltic Chill Café 1&2" and "Sweet & Sour" by Liedschatten.
Incredible
One of my all time favourite albums by one of my all time favourite bands. It's worth the money
