Album Review

For decades by this point, Canada has spawned countless rock bands — some that have been able to cross over to worldwide success (Neil Young, Rush, etc.), and some that never truly connected outside of the Great White North (the Tragically Hip, Moist, etc.). Come 2007, the world received another "big in Canada, hoping to break elsewhere" band — Mobile. Specializing in a radio-friendly sound that merges pop melodies with alt-rock so smoothed out that "alt-pop" is probably a more fitting description (although a dash of rock guitar can be detected), these Montreal natives scored a hit back home with their full-length debut, Tomorrow Starts Today, which later secured a U.S. deal. In the era's Death Cab for Cutie and Franz Ferdinand-friendly climate, Mobile should have no problem connecting with the aforementioned group's audiences, as evidenced by such similarly styled tunes as "Out of My Head" and "See Right Through Me." That said, there's not a heck of a whole lot to differentiate Mobile from the rest of the pack.

Best album I have heard in a long time

Mobile seemed to come out of nowhere, and I am actually from Montreal where Mobile first emerged. I discovered Mobile when their hit 'Out of my Head' started playing on local radio. It sounded good, so I decided to pick it up figuring that at the very least I would be supporting local talent. I expected 'Out of my Head' to be the only decent song, but was surprised to hear that 'Hands Tied,' 'New York Minute' and 'Montreal Calling' were just as original. However, the true highlight of the album for me was 'See Right Through Me.' It is possibly the best sounding song I have heard in months, and I listen to a lot of music. All in all, the album is something that is playing on my iPod constantly. It is the perfect choice for the hour drive home to and from work everyday. It is highly recommended and I think that any fan of alternative would be foolish to pass this one up.
