Album Review

The Most Serene Republic might tip their hats to their Arts & Crafts labelmates on their debut album Underwater Cinematographer, but this theatrical sextet is their own supergroup. Underwater Cinematographer comes off shiny and happy at first with its majestic piano arrangements dancing around angst-ridden guitar riffs and warm harmonies. Frontman/songwriter Adrian Jewett wears his heart on his sleeve like so many of indie rock's tortured souls (Lou Barlow, Ben Gibbard, Joey Sweeney), particularly on songs such as "The Protagonist Suddenly Realizes What He Must Do in the Middle of Downtown Traffic" and "In Places, Empty Spaces." These two particular tracks not only highlight a classic sentimentality, but also an inviting and a very personal effort from the band. They make it okay to be playful ("King of No One") and smart ("You're a Loose Cannon McArthur...But You Get the Job Done"), all without melodrama and too much romance. Underwater Cinematographer isn't your quintessential debut album. It's too complex, too inquisitive, and too ambitious. Tip your hats to the Most Serene Republic.

POTENTIAL

The first thing to understand about this group is that they are young. Not to say that young musicians cant make brilliant art, but that it takes serious control of the writing to turn 5 kids ambitions into beauty. Here is an album that demonstrates the groups potential but falls short of the sound the group desires. So once again, the band is young and needs time to develope their sound, but do not doubt for a second their future. The content is there.

The Next Big Indie Thing

The Most Serene Republic will definatly be the next big thing in indie rock; Canada's Death Cab, if you will. This album via Arts & Crafts, producers of the brilliant Broken Social Scene and the always resiliant Stars, has really made me think about things in different ways. It made me realize how much beauty there really was in the small things again. The simplistic complexity of the sounds in this set of tracks really stands out in my mind as the definition of indie rock. The Most Serene Republic is like sex and chocolate in a record. All you have to do is stick it in, press play and drift off into a realm of imagination and wonder. This is truely beauty. Prologue: Alright for a prologue. 4* Content Was Always My Favourite Colour: Brilliant first track. I can't say anything bad. 5* (Oh) God: Really gives me a Death Cab vibe. Wonderful track. 5* The Protagonist...: Fantastic song. The piano in the background is phenominal. 5* Proposition 61: An acoustically powered track. It's a nice change of pace. 5* Where Cedar Nouns...: Random name, but fantastic song. 5* In Places, Empty Spaces: A depressing Death Cab montage. 5* Relative Eyes: Impressive. Another brilliant addition. 5* King of No One: I could see it played in an elevator as background music. 5* You're a Loose Cannon...: The best track on this album. It is so unbelievable amazing. 5* Epilogue: Brilliant conclusion. The complete music package. 5* I can't say enough. Buy the album. There is no doubt in my mind that you should own this. Give Canadian indie a chance and buy this album. You won't regret it.
