Album Review
Canada's favorite boys the Tragically Hip push the sounds of heartland and down-home country-rock on their second album, Up to Here. This album also marks the band's first stateside release, and basically it's a record of burgeoning talent, suggesting what is yet to come from the Tragically Hip. Frontman Gordon Downie is raw and rugged, twisting American trad rock into gritty rock & roll. There's a lot of heartfelt emotion woven into pure musical swagger on songs like "New Orleans Is Sinking" and "When the Weight Comes Down." "Blow at High Dough" follows the lead of its foot-stompin', hand-clappin' rock tracks.

This album is a classic ....
In 1989, when this album came out, it signalled the end of the eighties for me in more than one way. I remember turning on the cassette player (ya Im that old) and being blown away by it. No synthesizers, no glam rock, no thrashing heavy metal, just song after great song mixing Gordon Downie's "unique" vocals (gotta give him that), cool lyrics and straight up rock. It just felt right. Not one bad song, in my opinion. Give it a shot. This is a great album.
If you're Canadian you need to own this album
From the now hauntingly prophetic New Orleans is Sinking to 38 Years Old to Blow at High Dough this is quintessential Canadian rock. How these guys never never developed a massive American following is as preplexing to me that Nickleback did generate a big following. Buy this album, crack open a beer and chill out in your favourite lounge chair while you give it a listen.
Probably the best Hip Album
This is where it all began, in one of the best albums ever created! Sure they had a bunch of great songs scattered among their later albums, but none were so consistent as to contain one spectacular song after another like this one. Just unbelievably great!
