iTunes Review

Valleys of Neptune features previously unreleased recordings primarily made by Hendrix after the recording of Electric Ladyland. “Mr. Bad Luck” was recorded during the Axis: Bold As Love sessions and that track and “Crying Blue Rain,” recorded in London on February 16, 1969 contain “additional bass and drum recording” in 1987. The rest are credited as purely 1969 and 1970 recordings. “Purity” issues aside, this is another fantastic collection of Jimi Hendrix tunes. Naturally, his playing is of high standard and the songs themselves range from the obvious (“Fire”) to the live staples (“Hear My Train A Comin’,” “Red House”) to the obscure (“Ship Passing Through the Night,” “Lullaby for the Summer”). The tension among the trio can be heard as bassist Noel Redding tends to play with more force and is replaced by Hendrix’s old friend Billy Cox on a few notable numbers (“Stone Free,” the title track, Elmore James’ “Bleeding Heart”). Sound quality is superb, and original engineer Eddie Kramer mixes these tracks using his intimate knowledge of Hendrix’s music to make them what Jimi imagined.

Not necessarily stoned, but.... Beautiful

This album is a mixed bag of how Jimi would write his songs and flush out his ideas - by jamming; and some finshed studio mixes that were never really completed before his death. They are loose and fairly unpolished which in these digital days of perfection can be quite refreshing at times. It's nice to hear an adventurous spirit coming through the air these days.
This will interest anyone who is a student of Jimi and the amazing phrasing that only he can play, lots of imitators but only one Jimi. The album comes nowhere near the Chas Chandler/Eddie Kramer years and the sounds that came out of the first 3 albums and those are the standards that I hold Hendrix to. It is nice to hear where the ideas came from but Jimi needed the confines of a producer to hold his feet to the fire and come up with the goods. Those collabarations are among rocks finest for sure.
For those of us who are trying to play Jimi's music, it always good to hear tracks like these to get an uncluttered or processed listen to what he actually plays. In some ways it is like looking at a painting in different light or from a different angle. I usually find that I appreciate the original a little more than I did before, anything to open those ears up even more.
I think I own a least 1 version of the songs above, in some cases many more, so although they may be unreleased they are not unheard material. The last 2 tracks of this release are available on "Hear My Music" for those of you who are interested. Thanks for the read.

Welcome back.

41 years and still going strong.
Cheers too you Mr. Hendrix

A wise tribute

I have to agree with Alex_LA; perhaps they should've put this out a few years back, yet still, this compendium is full of his best work and the most catchy and ingenious tracks he ever put out. It's too bad that it didn't include Purple Haze, but at the same time it's nice that it didn't; seeing that he is slowly becoming known for only that one track with younger listeners, so it's nice to pay respect to his other works as well.

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s

In his brief four-year reign as a superstar, Jimi Hendrix expanded the vocabulary of the electric rock guitar more than anyone before or since. Hendrix was a master at coaxing all manner of unforeseen sonics from his instrument, often with innovative amplification experiments that produced astral-quality feedback and roaring distortion. His frequent hurricane blasts of noise and dazzling showmanship — he could and would play behind his back and with his teeth and set...
