Customer Reviews
Go with what you know. Good call.
I think everyone has a love/hate relationship with the town they grew up in. No city is perfect and when you live somewhere for a long time all the flaws come to the surface and really stick out. But at the same time you love this place. After all, it's home. And that in a nutshell is the feeling I get from Matt's latest album. It's a concept album through and through – not all that surprising considering Beautiful Midnight and moreso Hospital Music were concepts as well. Whereas Hospital Music was more stripped down, simplified and intensely personal, Vancouver is more grandiose in its designs, painting a picture of the city as seen through his eyes. I've heard mention that this album is "Avalanche-like" and I admit I had the same thought when I first heard it. This isn't a slight – Avalanche was and is amazing. The strings are back in full force with amazing sonics, effects and arena-sized rock-outs. It's extremely listenable. You don't need to be in a certain mood. Just thrown it on and enjoy. One last note: a layman might glance over this album, see the release date and think it's a cash in for the 2010 olympics. That would be a gross error. If you've read Matthew's blog or heard any interviews on the subject you would know that he is a very vocal opponent of the games coming to Vancouver for numerous reasons (politically, economically, socially). If anything (and this is my own opinion), this album makes for a very subtle indictment of the games coming to his city. As great as they are, they come at an incredible cost (both financial and human). And that often gets glossed over. But it shouldn't.
A Masterpiece. Explosive.
I cannot list every positive word that exists, but can suggest a start with brilliant, beautiful, and awe-inspiring. Then keep going. The list is never going to end when describing "Vancouver." I've loved everything Matt has done, from MGB days to his solo work in particular. He's up so many levels with his multiple talents, artistry and depth, you know he's only going to give us more great music, but then he gives us THIS! It really is incredible...there really are not enough adequate words.
I'm not going to go into each song, as I will only repeat myself: this is a strings heavy album, which I adore ("Avalanche" has always been my favourite MG solo album.) Most songs have crazy-beautiful strings. Guitar: the sound(s) you love and then some. Beautiful piano, superb bass, drums, and so forth. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the greatest instrument: his voice. Unreal, that beautiful, effortless range...how is there even any room for me to love it more?
I've been listening for days on end (streamed on his site) and I cannot shout the praises of this album enough. I'm going to end up listing all the songs, but standouts are: Volcanoes, The Boy Who Could Explode, Empty's Theme Park, A Silent Army In The Trees, Last Parade, Us Remains Impossible, Fought to Fight It...seriously, forget it! They are ALL standouts!!!
Cannot wait to see him live in concert again, both December 18th & 19th at Massey Hall.
P.S. - acoustic bonus tracks are also incredible, no surprise.
Awe-inspiring
Since I was 12yrs old and I watched the video to "hello time bomb", on MuchMusic I have loved Matthew Good. I've been a huge fan of his music, every album has a meaning in my life to it and with his new album it is no different. Now eight years later I'll still hum to every one of his songs at work, school and at home. Something about his amazing voice and his lyrics have always been my favorite parts. Thank you Matt for putting out an extraordinary album and thank you for everything. By the way, "a silent army in the trees", is my favorite song right now since my best friend is leaving this week for Afgahnistan and god this song really gets to me. Thanks again Matt.
