An enigmatic artist whose style is pretty much impossible to categorize, Saul Williams has been releasing records since 2000 and has worked with everyone from Rick Rubin and Zack de la Rocha to Nine Inch Nails and Mars Volta. He's perhaps best known for his starring role in the 1998 film Slam, but his career has progressed beyond competitive poetry to include forays into all kinds of music, book publishing, and film work. Volcanic Sunlight is his sixth solo album and is predictable only in its total unpredictability. He veers from genre to genre on each of the 14 tracks, touching on moody indie rock, Bollywood-inspired world music, post-industrial electronica, '80s throwback, and left-field hip-hop. With so many diverse styles on display here, what you need most to enjoy this is a wide-open mind and lack of preconceived notions. It's sonically schizophrenic but thoroughly enjoyable. Standout tracks include the Marley Marl–sampling "Rocket," the futuristic dance-pop "Girls on Saturn," the folksy "Innocence," and the snap-laced slow jam "Fall Up."
