Small Doses of Magic
“Heroes” is a good album to have in the collection, and supports a much needed organization. There are small doses of magic on the album. Mick Jones with Lily Allen on "Straight to Hell" is brilliant, and refreshing to hear as a huge Clash fan. Other great covers include Elbow doing "Running to Stand Still, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs with "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker", Peaches with "Search and Destroy" and the Scissor Sister doing "Do the Strand". These stand out as the best on the album. With the good comes the bad with this one unfortunately. Duffy butchers "Live and Let Die", and Estelle sounds like a Canadian Idol doing "Superstition". A number of the songs fall short like "Smile" and "Atlantic City". Overall, this is a good album; however, it could have used a bit of editing/refining.
Cover Albums: We are hard to please
There are some fine fine songs on this good-cause album, but as a whole many may feel the album isn't as good as they expected. If you have a strong attachment to the original songs you might find some of these covers overly contrived. If you're a fan of these current artists, you might just dig what they do. Best bets for a quick fix are: Beck, Lily Allen, The Like, and TV on the Radio. FF and YYY aren't that bad either. The sound on the album isn't consistent -- not that we should really expect that; so this is an album perhaps shuffled in your ipod rather than digested in one sitting.
Eighties and before meet the Noughts
Heard the Beck cover (Leopard-Skin-Pill-Box Hat) and was intrigued; thought Lily, Yeahs*3 and the Sisters owned their covers, too. There is an Idol-like quality to this (hear the tunes of yesterday sung by today's hot rockers), and I wonder if TV on the Radio need any more hype, but any album that does covers of both Sheena is a Punk Rocker and Running to Stand Still is worth more than a listen.
