Album Review

Rock has certainly evolved a great deal since the 1970s and '80s, but the more things change in rock, the more they stay the same. So inevitably, there will be artists who get much of their creative and artistic inspiration from rock's past, which is what Cuff the Duke do on Way Down Here. This is an early 2009 recording from a band that didn't exist before 2001, but Way Down Here leaves no doubt that Cuff the Duke's roots run deep. There is no shortage of '60s, '70s, and '80s influences here — influences (either direct or indirect) that include Neil Young, Blue Rodeo (not surprising given Cuff the Duke's Blue Rodeo connection), Bob Dylan, the Byrds, and Buffalo Springfield. One can characterize Way Down Here as roots rock, indie rock, jangle pop, and — on occasion — alternative country-rock. These Canadians aren't country purists or hardcore honky tonkers by any stretch of the imagination; they aren't pretending to be Buck Owens, Hank Snow, or George Jones. But they are country-influenced — at least some of the time. And however one categorizes their work, they bring an attractive sense of songcraft to melodic, unassuming tracks such as "Old Photograph," "The Words You Ignore," "Another Day in Purgatory," and "You Were Right." Cuff the Duke are reflective and subtle; they don't beat listeners over the head in order to get their emotional points across, but they get them across just the same. And while Way Down Here isn't quite exceptional, it is a solid and appealing example of the inspiration that Cuff the Duke get from rock's past.

Great album

I saw these guys open for Hayden a couple years ago... The first song was actually fairly catchy.. Then the second song was also catchy. And by the 3rd one I was paying much closer attention.

Needless to say, I got a copy of their album after seeing them live. The songs found their way into my regular rotation fairly quickly and from there they have turned into one of my favourite bands.

The singer might not instantly jump out as you as amazing... but I think some other singers like Hayden and Neil Young are the same way.. they grow on you so you may need a little more then just an iTunes song preview to decide if you like it.

You put on a mix of Cuff, Hayden, Neil Young, City and Colour (maybe a lil Great Lake Swimmers and The Sadies) and you got yourself a nice little evening planned with some good Canadian alt-folk-country-rock.

This album is excellent... "Promises", "Its All Blur" and "Follow Me" are early highlights but there's lots of other good songs on it too.

If you're just starting with cuff then you should can also try "Take My Money and Run", "Belgium or Peru" and "Ballad of a Lonely Construction Worker" as a little starter pack.

Also, the lead singer's solo album is REALLY good (search for Wayne Petti)

Get it!

Love it.

I love cuff the duke, and I love this album. Way to go guys.

A Gem

This is another solid record from one of the best Canadian bands out there. The more you listen to it, the better it gets. Get this album and enjoy it.

Biography

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

It is no wonder that Canada's Cuff the Duke opened for Blue Rodeo on a key tour or that Blue Rodeo's Greg Keelor is producing their fourth album. Like Keelor and his own bandmates, Cuff the Duke are one of those unbelievably talented bands that can jump genres like a game of hopscotch — to the point where their music is almost undefinable except for the good ol' catchall, "alternative."...
