Hip Lesson # 74: Never rely on the single

Die hard Hip fans will argue that anyone who doesn't like this album (or any album) simply doesn't get it. As a longtime fan, I get it, I just don't love it. Probably due to the expectations given by the single. The only true rock song on the album drifts among melodic, country-esque songs. Maybe it's a sign of the times, but I was hoping for a follow up to World Container that would excite and inspire. Listen to this album when you have a moment of meloncholly. Many of these songs will tap into your inner Neil Young.

It's the HIP...

The Hip is back... but were they ever really gone? If your a Hip fan, you'll appreciate this album and buy it. I don't think The Hip will win any new fans with this album, while it's a strong album and I'm enjoying it a lot there is not a lot of radio play on the album, in my opinion and for someone just getting into The Hip this is a far more complex album. Something like Fully Completely is a great first album. All that being said they have stayed close to their roots and there is a certain distinct Canadiana to the album, which is good. I can't see them gaining many more south of the border fans however. Cheers.

Solid Addition

Another great addition to a stellar body of work - alt/country/rock. Morning Moon great kickoff. The Last Recluse -- check out the lyrics on this guy! As with most of their work, it takes some listening but that's what non-disposable music is all about -- it grows on you and then sticks with you. As for everyone missing the rock (on the first day the album is released) -- try listening past the first 30 seconds of each song before reviewing the album. To name a few, may I direct you to Speed River, Queen of the Furrows (guitar hooks dudes!), Now the Struggle has a Name, The Exact Feeling... There is rock all over this album. Please folks, if your going to review an album don't you think you should give it at least one good sitting?

Formed in 1983 in Kingston, Ontario, the Tragically Hip came together with childhood friends Gordon Downie (vocals), Bobby Baker (guitar), Paul Langlois (guitar), Gord Sinclair (bass), and Johnny Fay (drums).
