iTunes Review
This thirteen song soundtrack to the Showtime television series Weeds veers all over the stylistic map. Beginning, naturally, with Randy Newman singing the series theme song, the all-too brief “Little Boxes,” the collection quickly submerses itself in eclectic alternative rock ranging from Ween’s mock hard rock feedback for “You F**ked Up” to the jaunty free spirit sprint of Oh No! Oh My!’s “Walk in the Park” and the effervescent swinging pop of Mr. Smolin’s “The Earth Keeps Turning On.” Great Lake Swimmers serve up the sparse and haunting, country-bluegrass inspired “Your Rocky Spine” and State Radio contribute a raw harmony-fueled read of “Keep Sake” that keeps its rustic edge. Weeds star Kevin Nealon throws in his own banjo-led 30-second quip, “Just Like the Superdome,” and adds his vocals to That 1 Guy’s “Buttmachine,” a tune highlighted in his memorable dance scene from season three. Singer-songwriter Page Francis delivers the compelling narrative “Chariot,” while Eleni Mandell ends things with the upbeat and playful “Let’s Drive Away.”
