Beautiful sounds

Wilco's sound is clean and stylish, but with its hair tousled enough to give it that "just rolled out of bed" feeling of relaxed immediacy. It's impossible to listen to this album and not compare its sounds to the Beatles, particularly later-Beatles work. The influences are obvious and *very* likeable. Wilco brings their own sound to this album, lest you think it sounds like something you've already heard. Somewhere between the Beatles, Crowded House, and The Shins is.... Wilco. What makes them distinct? Pulsating rock rhythms, catchy riffs, introspective lyrics, and dead-on harmonies. Favorites on this album are Wilco, You Never Know, and You and I. You'll find this album following you after listening, and all you'll want to do is listen to it again.

Solid but not their best

A good album, but doesn't seem to hold my attention as much as past releases. "Wilco" is a good opener, but would've loved to have more of Nels Cline's guitar bring the song (actually, the whole album could have used more Nels!) to a higher level. "One Wing" is reminiscent of the Tragically Hip in its drumming and guitar and soaring finish. Songs are solid, but fairly straightforward without too many surprises, with one exception: "Bull Black Nova" is by far one of the most haunting and engaging songs I've heard in awhile. The darkness and paranoia created by Jeff Tweedy's vocals is amazing, just barely holding on to a sense of control over a situation, conveying the dark and panicked emotions of someone who is on the edge of losing their mind from regret. Sonically, the drum and bass lines drive the tune towards it's almost unbearable climax. The interplay of the simple single-note guitar and keyboard riffs creates an incredible tension as the song lurches forward to it's incredibly emotional closing. "Pick up!"...awesome.

Wilco will love you baby

And if you love Wilco, you won't be disappointed. Tweedy holds true to his beauty in music and lyrics with this album. Go see them live and it's just as good of not better.

Wilco rose from the ashes of the seminal roots rock band Uncle Tupelo, which disbanded in 1994. While Jay Farrar, one of the group's two singer/songwriters, went on to form Son Volt, his ex-partner Jeff Tweedy established Wilco along with the remaining members of Tupelo's final incarnation, which included drummer Ken Coomer as well as part-time bandmates John Stirratt (bass) and Max Johnston (mandolin, banjo, fiddle, and lap steel). Guitarist Jay Bennett rounded out the...
