Customer Reviews
This is an album from the days of when albums were still albums...
I've been a die-hard Phoenix fan ever since I discovered them in the movie Lost in Translation several years ago. I bought It's Never Been Like That the second it came out, and waited for this album with bated breath ever since (seriously). Getting this album home, rolling a cigarette, and giving it a front-to-back listen the day it was released was the happiest moment I've had in a long time. I refuse to play the CD in my car, and will only listen to it in the order of the tracks. Yes, I'm a little bit insane for it, but truly this album stands out best when listening to its entire flow as a single "piece". If you buy it, make sure you give yourself an hour to sit down, relax, put on a good pair of headphones or a good stereo, and listen to it all. At the risk of sounding a bit "out-there", I'll call it a 10-track celebration of unpretenious human happiness. These guys have been unable to break out of their indie niche until now, possibly. Thanks to a huge marketing effort, it looks like they are finally doing it, and more people are able to discover the band. Phoenix is unlike any other group. Please, do yourself a favour and enjoy the recording while it lasts :)
It would have been 5 stars but...
Having been following Phoenix for awhile now it's tough to know where to slot Wolfgang. This is definitely the most commercially appealing album they've ever put out - I'm just not sure that makes this a great album. I wouldn't say it's a better, or more complete album than their first three. The hooks on Lisztomania and 1901 are brilliant and produced perfectly, but for me, there's something missing. That said, Phoenix are still far and above better than 99% of what's out there.
Amazing
I've been a Phoenix fan for years. I had no idea they could get better but they have. This album is hands down my favorite record of the year.
