Album Review

Anyone still hoping that Sam Beam and Iron & Wine will ever go back to the lo-fi sound of their first album might as well give up on that pipe dream. On the 2005 EP Woman King, Iron & Wine's sound is more produced and varied than ever. The record's arrangements are overflowing with a wealth of percussion, vocal harmonies, banjos, violins, and pianos. Beam's vocals, while always a thing of beauty, sound more assured and powerful than ever. Iron & Wine sound like a real band here; if you heard them in a big-budget Hollywood film, you wouldn't even flinch. The widening and smoothing of the band's approach does Beam's songs great favors, too. While his songwriting is as emotionally direct and haunting as ever (no amount of studio sheen could change that), this EP never feels insular, as his previous albums sometimes did. It sounds widescreen and universal. Woman King is too short to be considered the high point of Iron & Wine's career — it certainly points in that direction, though.

Terrific and Wonderful: I just wish it was longer.

Wow, I still remember when I first heard Iron & Wine... man. I picked up "Our Endless Numbered Days" quite a while ago, and as soon as this EP hit the ITMS I gobbled it up. "Our Endles Numbered Days" is amazing, no question, I think only 4 songs of the 12 got only 3 stars (which is still an above average rating in my iTunes ratings), the rest is just gold! This EP would knock that album's socks off... if only it was a full length. I have listened to this endlessly. I listen to it to study, work, sleep, relax and everything in between. "Jezebel" (playing currently) - is a wonderful track, beautiful lyrics and voices. "Evening On the Ground (Lilith's Song)" - is much... louder I guess, than the rest of the EP, it actually has what sounds like electric guitars and I&W somehow makes that sound folky and subdued... wow. I don't have a favourite on this EP, they are all amazing. I really don't know if I can say anything more about it because I am still spellbound by I&W, a year after discovering the music. It is folky and dream like. I highly recommend! To see what else I listen to, check out: http://www.last.fm/user/DiscoStud/

Simply Incredible

This CD is the best work to-date of the brilliant Sam Beam (aka Iron & Wine). Haunting and passionate, Woman King seems more complexly arranged than his pervious work, but definitely does not sound over-produced and in fact still manages to convey a simplicity and directness that allows it to be listened to over and over. Out of my some 900 CDs, I listen to this one more than any other and have done so since I bought it 9 months ago -- every song except the last one rates 4 or 5 stars!

Thought provoking

Sam Bean's use of harmonies and drawn out notes leave thoughts and bubble up memories in your mind. This is definitely a great album with more to offer than extremely well produced music.

Singer/songwriter Samuel Beam, who rose to prominence with a blend of whispered vocals and softly homespun indie folk, chose the moniker Iron & Wine after coming across a dietary supplement named "Beef Iron & Wine" while working on a film.
