iTunes Review
Champion DJ Steve Aoki finally releases his debut album following years of running Dim Mak Records, promoting clubs, producing records, and spinning discs at A-list celebrity parties in L.A. Wonderland is thoroughly enjoyable crossover dance pop from start to finish, boasting an impressive cast of cameos from the opening cut. The infectiously groovy “Earthquakey People” not only features Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo—it has him rapping. The most salient song here has to be “Livin’ My Love,” a bubbling electro-hop hit graced by the presence of LMFAO and Nervo. Kid Cudi and Travis Barker appear on the slightly spacy “Cudi the Kid.” Unsurprisingly, will.i.am sounds like he’s having the most fun as his alter-ego Zuper Blahq drops hilarious rhymes masked in Auto-Tuned vocal distortion. And just when you think things couldn’t get any sillier, Sick Boy teams up with former members of The Exploited and Die Kreuzen for the industrial/punk-tinged “The Kids Will Have Their Say.” Of the three bonus tracks, “No Beef” is the standout thanks to soulful singing by Miss Palmer.
Customer Reviews
Aoki is a perfomer, first and foremost.
Stack this up against "Nothing But the Beat", "4x4=12" or "Fire and Ice", by Guetta, deadmau5 and Kaskade respectively, and I'm sorry this doesn't come even close to how solid those albums really are. But in its own right, "Wonderland" still packs a punch. There's some tracks that are noticeably less energetic than what people are used to from Aoki, but there's enough here that longtime/dedicated fans will enjoy.
Collectively, its a decent listen, but there isn't really a single track here, for me anyway, that stands out. "Turbulence" is obviously the most heavy hitting of everything on here, but it isn't a track that can carry the rest of the album on its back. My personal favourites were Turbulence, Heartbreaker, Misfits, and Come With Me.
Good for an Electro/House producer.
This is definitely an interesting blend of music. I don't get how people are saying that Turbulence is the only "hard-hitting" track on the album. No beef and Earthquakey people (the sequel) are amazing. Anyone that knows anything about Dance/Electronic music in general would know that.
I gave it 5 stars because Aoki is the best live performer I have ever seen (Seen him three times now). And I've seen most of the top 10 Dj's (along with others).
booooooo.
pretty shitty album if you ask me. theres maybe one good sounding song on there, the rest just sound like it wants to be dubstep but its mixed with someone barfing. dissapointed aoki
