Album Review

Moneen's 2009 release, The World I Want to Leave Behind, is certainly a sign of the times in the rock world — intricate musical bits are combined with emo-like vocals, and in the process, the group never forfeits the importance of melody. Sound like a familiar recipe? It should, as seemingly oodles of bands follow the same formula — especially those who find themselves playing on a Warped Tour stage. The Moneen gentlemen have obviously studied their vintage Sunny Day Real Estate recordings, especially on such tracks as "Believe," while throwing an early Radiohead-like curveball at us with "Redefine." Add to it some heavy Smashing Pumpkins guitar riffs ("Hold That Sound") and some mellow detours ("Lighters"), and you have to give Moneen some credit, as they refuse to be pigeonholed using a one-dimensional sound — something that the vast majority of their radio peers are quite guilty of.

Customer Reviews

Is this simple plan?

All the complex harmonies and fun time wigs, strong emotonal moments that related to the happiest and darkest moments of your own life are gone in this album. Now they are just like everyone I thought they never wanted to be. Boring machine like medocracy with anoint as much emotional connection as a tin foil hat. For shame

This used to be my favorite band

I played with this band multiple times and absolutely loved them. Back when they were on smallman.

I tuned out around the Red Tree. And now, this album sounds so generic it makes me very sad. I miss getting whipped in the head by hippie chris' dreadlocks.

Long live Smaller chairs!

It's good.

I like it. I feel like they're trying to mature as musicians and are experimenting with their sound trying to find something new for them. This album is a great new direction for them.
