iTunes Review

New Jersey’s Pat Grossi is a singer who draws attention. His head-turning falsetto transforms songs into arias and has made Active Child an immediate hit with the critics. His group has relocated from Denver to Los Angeles and there is a City of Angels haze to everything they touch. The Curtis Lane EP whetted listeners’ appetites for this debut full-length that is everything one would imagine it could be. The textures are adventurous synth-pop without settling on the limits of synths or the conformity of pop. A track like “Hanging On” takes the chorale majesty of Bon Iver and turns it into its own passion play. “Playing House,” in collaboration with How to Dress Well, draws comparisons to mid-‘80s funk. “High Priestess” warms things up with solid synthesizer chords and vocals that dance around the melody with thrilling results. “Johnny Belinda” uses its sparse textures to build on a world once imagined by the Blue Nile and David Sylvian.
