Album Review

While trying to form their identity on their Secretly Canadian debut, Suuns get a little lost among their influences. “Marauder” emulates Deerhoof successfully, “Sweet Nothing” is a dedication to Beck that sounds a lot like the man himself (circa The Information), and "Up Past the Nursery" is a dead ringer for a Clinic song complete with Ben Shemie singing through clenched jaw to get that surgical mask effect. Their full-length even ends with a cover (of Tyrannosaurus Rex, which to be fair, is pretty good). Even if the newly formed Canadian quartet is still searching for its individuality, when Suuns' strengths come together — as they often do on Zeroes QC — the mix of sparse beats, razor-wire guitar, and downer melodies can be compelling. The minor-key-inflected “PVC” and “Gaze” are among their most gleaming and rocking songs. Notably, the group thrives in a sparse environment, and the simple, open-aired electric guitar and vocal wash of “Fear” is surprisingly lovely.

Bon disque, nouveau genre

C'est un bon disque, les chansons son très différentes. Sa joue entre le rock et un peu d'électro.
Il est difficile de se faire une idée général du groupe car c est un style éclaté. C'est accrocheur, j'irai les voir en spectacle.

F***ing awesome

This trance-thecno-alternative-beat-electro-whatever-it-is record is amazing. It puts you in this trance when you listen to it. And the beats are just so nice, it's not some silly repetition of the same stuff with a little record spin every random time you feel like it; it's a though out, complex and satisfyingly dark sound that expresses what most music can't, and it does so with limited vocals, even without distinguishable words sometimes.

I saw this record on the On The Radar Report on MTV News, and flipped out. I felt so ahead of the current and everything, but what they said on the MTV News is true; this is powerful stuff, handle it carefully.

It fits perfectly for a movie I want to make. So I'm going to use it as a soundtrack for the short film. It's not commercial (for art school). But still I hope it doesn't bother them.

Biography

Formed: Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '10s

Blending aspects of dark electro, dissonant art rock, and plodding indie rock, Suuns, formerly named Zeroes, utilize minimalism in their wide-open (and often paranoid) sound. After their first EP, which was also titled Zeroes, they recorded a full-length with the Besnard Lakes' Jace Lasek at Breakglass Studios in their home city of Montreal. Upon Lasek's recommendation, the ten-song outing, Zeroes QC, got the attention of Secretly Canadian, and Suuns signed...
