About P. Diddy

Producer, rapper, record executive, entrepreneur, and all-around mogul Sean “P. Diddy” Combs achieved massive commercial success in the ’90s, helping to cement hip-hop’s place in pop culture. • Combs worked at Uptown Records before founding his own label, Bad Boy Entertainment, in 1993. Bad Boy released music by The Notorious B.I.G. Craig Mack, Total, and Faith Evans, earning Diddy a reputation as the mastermind executive producer behind their success. • Diddy and Bad Boy’s in-house production team The Hitmen became known for their slick, sample-heavy production on tracks for artists like Mary J. Blige, TLC, The Lox, and Mariah Carey, defining the sound of ’90s hip-hop and R&B. • Combs and his New York-based crew were part of a highly publicized rivalry with Death Row Records, the West Coast label led by Suge Knight and artists 2Pac and Snoop Dogg. The feud ended when Pac was murdered in September 1996, followed by the killing of The Notorious B.I.G. six months later. • Known at the time as Puff Daddy—one of his many sobriquets—Combs made his debut with the 1997 album No Way Out. • Featuring the singles “Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down” and “I’ll Be Missing You,” both of which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, No Way Out won the 1998 Grammy for Best Rap Album. It’s been certified seven-times platinum. • Combs continued his hot streak into the 2000s with pop-forward albums like 2006’s Press Play and Last Train to Paris, his 2010 collaboration with the duo Dirty Money. In the years following his 2015 mixtape MMM (Money Making Mitch), Diddy collabed with artists like Nipsey Hussle, Blood Orange, and A$AP Ferg.
