The New Iberia Blues is a delightfully twisty entry in James Lee Burke’s atmospheric mystery series starring Louisiana detective Dave Robicheaux. Called to investigate a string of brutal murders where the victims are staged to resemble tarot cards, the veteran detective narrows down a list of suspects that includes an escaped convict, a suspicious Hollywood hanger-on, and his old friend Desmond Cormier, a movie director with shady funders. Burke puts the straight-arrow Robicheaux into a morally ambiguous situation filled with empathetic-yet-deeply-flawed characters. His book’s as much a meditation on good and evil as it is an engaging thriller.
