Unflinching and Honest
"Released" explores mental and physical abuse and its forms of captivity. Contrasting a girl's past experience as a member of a fundamentalist Christian cult to her later experience when trapped in a brutal relationship, the novel beautifully delves into themes of self-acceptance and self-ownership, religion vs. faith, reproductive freedoms, family, and forgiveness. The scenes are (appropriately) both brutal and tender; loving and savage. I enjoyed the recurring metaphor of the pulling of teeth - not for its beauty, but it's succinctness: before healing, there is pain. Unforgettable and cathartic.
