The year is 1348. Europe has fallen under the shadow of the Black Death. In this apocalyptic wasteland, where bodies lay scattered in the thousands, one hope remains: a village rumored to be untouched by the disease. Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Slams Christians against pagans with little love for either. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Mar 11, 2011

Rotten: Early on "Black Death" falls victim to its own sluggish sickness, its narrative drive proving no match for the aggressively rotted pallor, dour acting and tiresomely handheld you-are-there aesthetics. – Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times, Mar 10, 2011

Fresh: The movie's real coup is in how it repeatedly shifts our allegiance from Christians to pagans, interrogating the unfathomably still-popular notion that barbarism is best countered with more of the same. – Mark Holcomb, Village Voice, Mar 8, 2011

Fresh: "Going medieval" on your enemies isn't just a figure of speech in Christopher Smith's stylish spatter-horror exercise, which uses desperation-fueled religious fervor to interrogate the intersection of fear and faith. – Ian Buckwalter, NPR, Mar 12, 2011

black death

Good entertaining movie about the middle ages,. Very nice to see a modern take on the "black death" that plagued Europe. Could have been more indepth and a tad longer, but overall it was money well spent. I rented to check it out. No regrets :)

A rather sterile movie

Not all that entertaining, the tone is very grim and somewhat monotonous - I think the director tried to bring a very realistic, gritty approach to the movie, but in the end it felt you feeling rather empty, and a bit queasy...the topics seeming not all that relevant, despite overall having good pieces of acting and cinematography.

Black Death

I really enjoyed this movie. It was raw and edgy, and just an all around excellent movie. Fantastic actors with the ability to make you love them and then hate them. Incredible story that is believable, not like a lot of the witchcraft movies that leave no space for imagination or reality; Black Death was perfectly placed between the two. Not too over the top and not to subtle. All I can finish with is... BRILLIANT!!!!!
