Plot Summary

Behind ever great man there lies a teacher, and this was certainly true of Bruce Lee, who claimed as his mentor a martial arts expert named Ip Man (1893-1972). A genius of Wushu (or the Chinese martial arts school), Ip Man grew up in a China nearly ripped to pieces by racial hatred, nationalistic strife and warfare. He rose like a phoenix above these ashes, however, courtesy of his participation in matches against various Wushu masters and kung-fun warriors - ultimately training martial arts icons such as Lee. This biopic from director Wilson Yip dramatizes Ip's life story.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The fanboys and girls won't notice such failings amid the displays of wing chun kung fu--the extras and body doubles do some truly impressive acrobatics--and those with a taste for big historical tearjerkers will be happy as well. – Mike Hale, New York Times, Oct 1, 2010

Fresh: Wilson Yip has crafted a gripping, rousing, beautifully structured yarn, built around a calm but charismatic star performance by Donnie Yen and magnificent action sequences choreographed by the legendary Sammo Hung. – Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.com, Oct 1, 2010

Fresh: Legend trumps fact in Ip Man, a kickass fictionalized biopic of the titular grandmaster of Wing Chun martial arts and mentor to Bruce Lee. – Nick Schager, Village Voice, Sep 28, 2010

Rotten: If you're looking for great action scenes, you've found them. But if you desire more than eye candy, such as character and plot development and historical accuracy, you'll have to look elsewhere. – V.A. Musetto, New York Post, Oct 1, 2010

One the best!

Excellent production. Donnie Yen proves to be one of the best in the industry. If you love martial arts, you'll love this movie!

Best Martial Arts Movie Ever!!!

This is the best martial arts movie I've ever seen. The story is great and the action and the martial arts choreography are amazing! Although the main actor, Donnie Yen isn't very well known in North America like Jet Li or Jackie Chan, he certainly makes his mark with this film. As long as you don't mind reading subtitles, this movie is a must watch for all martial arts movie fans.

Awesome

I'm not a fan of subtitled movies, but this is a must see. Probably the best Chinese made movie I've ever seen. The story made sense and came together smoothly, the acting was good and the martial arts was good and made realistic (unlike Jet Li hanging in the air for 10 seconds while roundhouse kicking 10 guys in the face at once). I look forward to watching Ip Man 2.
