Plot Summary

Zach Galifianakis, Keir Gilchrist, Lauren Graham and Emma Roberts star in this uplifting comedy about finding sanity in the most unlikely of places. Sometimes what’s in your head isn’t as crazy as you think…that’s certainly true for Craig (Gilchrist), a stressed-out teenager who checks himself into a mental health clinic for some time out. What he finds instead is an unlikely mentor (Galifianakis), a potential new romance (Roberts) and an opportunity to begin anew. Charming, witty and smart, it’s a coming-of-age story that’s kind of a funny story…

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Disarmingly gentle, sweet and whimsical. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Oct 8, 2010

Fresh: Despite the pleasant, loopy energy and fine performances -- Galiflanakis conjures a surprisingly sad character, and I grew fond of Gilchrist, with his impenetrable black eyes and rosebud mouth -- you walk out of it shaking your head. – Mary F. Pols, TIME Magazine, Oct 8, 2010

Rotten: Co-directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, who directed the gritty indie dramas Half Nelson and Sugar, go all gooey and sentimental here. – Lou Lumenick, New York Post, Oct 8, 2010

Rotten: So many elements, from its setup to scenes of therapy sessions and hallway high jinks, seem as canned as the blandest dayroom Muzak. – Ann Hornaday, Washington Post, Oct 8, 2010

kind of, almost life altering

In a word, wow. not a sarcastic wow, just a wow. see the actual movie, its not really that extraordinary. kid gets depressed, kid goes to a mental hospital, but he discovers more about life inside the hospital than when he's out there living it. The message just makes you appreciate every day just a tiny it more.. its hard to explain. This could be your favourite movie, you could hate it.. it really depends on who you are. You should definitely watch it. In the strangest way, its a movie about depression, that makes you happy.

Best movie I've seen in a while

No ifs, ands, or buts!! Phenomenal movie, great cast, with a good storyline. For both critical cinema junkies and average joes movie goers. 100 % must see!!

Reminds you to follow your heart

Great movie. Very believable characters. Good acting. Great script. Has a Garden State kind of feel to it. I loved it.
