Plot Summary
When Lina gets dumped by her boyfriend right before she leaves for her summer vacation in Europe, she invites another boy along instead. She soon discovers she has nothing in common with her new beau, and her family only makes matters worse by trying to force the two together.

MODRA - A Beautiful Film
A beautiful coming of age film that captures the essence of being seventeen. Such a nice balance between discovering yourself, and discovering your roots. The pace of the film suits the story perfectly. This amazing piece of art by Veninger, even though her first feature film, has grabbed the attention of audiences and critics alike. One of Canada's Top Ten films of 2010, the Bratislava Audience Choice award winner of 2010, and a Best Actor Award at the Vancouver International Film Festival 2010, MODRA is sure to win your heart.
Ignore the "top critic" Rotten Tomatoes review…
This film has been getting lots of critical praise & attention, including the list of Canada's "Top Ten" films of 2010. None of which is very surprising – Modra was the best Canadian film that I've seen in a long time and it was made out of practically nothing. As the other reviewers here say, this film is absolutely beautiful and the "real deal." The relationships are fascinating, the music is terrific and the imagery totally gorgeous. The theme of longing for connection to other people & other places is palpable in every shot, and is a testament to the lingering power of distance in our modern world of compressed space & time.
The director, Ingrid Veninger, is an indie darling who has remained deliberately low profile, but she and her daughter (the lead actress, Hallie Switzer) both deserve huge credit for taking risks and staying humble… in spite of the fact that both are insanely fearless and talented.
This is a rare and brave film. Watch Modra with someone you love and you won't be disappointed.
The real deal
This movie completely captured both the feeling of uncertainty and adventure that can occur in a trip to your homeland. Teenage frustration and longing are raw, authentic, and so, so beautiful in one of my favourite festival films last year. Loved it.
