What happens to country music when it's delivered by the former editor of a literary journal out of the University of Toronto? Well, it becomes the alt-country of Justin Rutledge, purveyor of beautifully sung, finely observed stories devoid of cliché yet overflowing with detail. His debut, 2005's No Never Alone, set out his intentions, while its follow-up, 2006's The Devil On a Bench in Stanley Park, earned the artist a Juno nomination — check out the sweet lack of embellishment on "I'm Your Man, You're My Radio." Man Descending (2008) offers a nod to Guy Vanderhaeghe's short story collection of the same name, and serves as proof that the pen is often mightier than the stetson.
