Like many kids with unconventional childhoods, Ottawa's Kathleen Edwards discovered that early disruptions could be converted into valuable currency later in life. In her case, both parents were diplomats assigned at various times to Korea and Switzerland, which kept their future songwriting prodigy away from contemporary North American musical norms, and drove her to seek inspiration in her brother's record collection — Neil Young, Tom Petty, and Bob Dylan, for whom Edwards would one day open. Her 2003 full-length debut, Failer, showcased the beguiling, story-laden blend of folk and alt-country that sets her apart from the pack. This selection draws on her finest moments to date, through 2008's excellent Asking for Flowers.
