- 3. "Fight the Power" by Public Enemy: "This song singularily defines my youth. I found the tape, used, for $3 at my local record store and played it until it melted. Where I grew up, Rock ruled, and AC/DC where the Kings. The song is actually about the effects of drug abuse and is an ode to the passing of the bands original lead singer, Bon Scott. Back then I just thought it was an awesome song."
- 4. "Road Trippin'" by Red Hot Chili Peppers: "A tune that reflects one of the most simple enjoyments in life: a road trip. There is nothing like taking a few hundred bucks, a backpack, a couple good friends, jumping in a vehicle, and just driving. They often make for lifelong memories. I got into this one when we had just come off the road and were taking a hiatus from everything. The song made me want to start touring again and kicking with my bros."
- 5. "Black With N.V. (No Vision)" by Black Sheep: "Dres was one of the most skilled MCs to ever touch a mic. Smooth delivery and lyrics that could range from party anthems to the provoking of deep thought. On this song he talks about the struggles of being in the everyday workplace. Working as a dishwasher, he uses the job to reference his plight. The style he spits, I have never heard again, and the message, I haven't heard enough."
- 8. "Paint It, Black" by The Rolling Stones: "The intro puts it hooks into you and there is no escaping it. A view into the power of the mind. The struggles of life can sometimes be hard to deal with, and Mick really puts it all out there. Taking any images of happiness or positivity and turning them to a cruel hue of black. A song of total emotional self indulgence, probably why they used it at the end of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas."
- 9. "What They Do" by The Roots: "One of the greatest rap groups ever. Black Thought is a &%$@?!! genius. When this song came out, the dawn of look-alike, sound-alike rappers was at its height. The video had all the flossing props but would show a tagline beside them. For example, they would show a dope ride, then an icon would appear saying '$500 a day rental'. The lyrics encourage you to be original, do your own thing. What better message in life is there than that?"
- 10. "Promiscuous" by Nelly Furtado & Timbaland: "She came, she saw, she conquered. I'm extremely proud of my homegirl Nelly. She has reinvented herself yet again and this time her confidence is at an all-time high. Timbaland's beats are always ridiculous and I think they sparked that fire in Nelly she was waiting for. A return to her hip-hop roots, she brings it to the mic like the MC that she is. Obviously I am not the only who agrees, the song is huge and the album is numero uno. Way to go, girl!"
