Podcast Description
The Accidental Survivors are three geeky Canadians who drink and talk about gaming and other related topics. The podcasts generally focuses on role-playing games in the modern genre, but can move as far afield as the hosts decide. That's because it's their podcast and they are often distracted by bright, shiny objects. Or beer.

ExplicitEpisode 68: The Accidental Survivors LIVE! | This is the Live episode we recorded on December 22nd, 2011. For the broadcast, we had an extra Skype account logged into our conversation, which in turn broadcast the call out to Mixlr, which sent the audio live to the internet. The setup worked pretty well. During this episode, we chat in the chat-room with listeners, and haul one of our long-time listeners ("Dark Canary" on the forums) into the conversation. We talk a little bit about Christmas, and a lot about why we changed our format from "The Modern Gaming Podcast". Have a listen! Have any questions for us? Feature - X-Roads Chronicles Let's talk about the winner of our modern contest and soon to be published game setting. We've got Walt Robillard as a guest. 3. The Hook Interception at the Ten Yard Line: The players are gang members or members of the modern Mob, who have been sent to Romulus to pick up a load of Seracaine, an exotic drug. During the ID Crossover back to Homeline, the Order Primus sets off a quantum bomb that screws the transport and brings the folks home and the product elsewhere. Crossroads' techs track the shipment (disguised as exotic foods) to Deadside. The players insist that they be allowed to go after it but are told to write it off as a loss by the IDC. The mob boss dishes out the name of a Crosser (Coyote - a person that deals in illegal ID travel) and the crew goes to Deadside to get the stuff back. They find that a Ride Gang (motorcycle gang) on the other side has scooped the shipment and have horded it for themselves. Can the players infiltrate the town of Little Mesa and get the drugs back? Can the recovery go off without the players getting dosed with radiation, sold into slavery by the ride gang, or being eaten by Gnashers (giant mutated dogs)? 4.Podcast News A) Spooky Outhouse Showcase I was lucky enough to join Ryan from Save Against Frostbite, Artemis from The Bear Swarm! Podcast, and Jonathan from Kicked in the Dicebags on the third episode of the Spooky Outhouse Showcase. The episode hasn't dropped yet, but I'll be shouting about it on the forums when it does. News & Views Rogue Trader, a game of exploration and profit in the grim darkness of the far future of Warhammer 40,000. Kazei 5 the anime-cyberpunk setting for Hero System 6th Edition and Mutants and Masterminds 2nd Edition. Modern20 is in print. 2. Feature - Cyberpunk'd Some of the things we talked about: Literature like the Sprawl Trilogy, Snowcrash, and Jennifer Government. RPGs like Shadowrun, Cyberpunk 2020/Cyberpunk, and SLA Industries. Mass Media like Bubblegum Crisis, Blade Runner, and Ghost in the Shell 3. The Hook Dark Cauldron: A hook for a modern or cyberpunk game, submitted by Chuck. Dark Cauldron is the latest craze in online interactive gaming. In fact, it's so interactive and addictive that one client, a wealthy billionaire, wants you to take extreme measures to get his son away from the game, which he calls a cult. As a cyberpunk adventure, the game takes place in cyberspace and the PCs will jack in remotely and attempt a rescue as fantasy avatars of their normal personas. They will find that the company that runs the game has dealt with "griefers" like them before, and has avatars with safety protocols disengaged to deal with them. The PCs will have to learn how to hack their avatars to be able to fight back, take out the cyberguards, then talk some sense into the boy they're trying to rescue. As a modern adventure, the game takes place at a "cafe", where players sit back in specially made sofas looking up at large 3-d displays and taking "herbal drinks" (that are drugged) that enhance the experience. Again a physical conversation with the boy is impossible and the PCs must enter the fictional world of the game to make contact with him. And again, cyber-warriors in the game will try to stop them and are capable of inflicting real damage, thanks to the PCs' drugged state making everything seem real. Here, rather than hacking the game for better chances in combat, the PCs realizing they are being drugged and either getting off the substances, or spiking the guards' cocktails will help even the odds. Either way, once their client's son is free, he tasks them to go after the game's servers, taking it offline, permanently. This will be a much more normal adventure, with the PCs either using their tech savvy to permanently crash the game's servers, or their skill at breaking and entering to deal with the problem more directly, either through a well-placed bomb or perhaps something as low tech as a big sledgehammer. 4. The Hook It is October, 1867. For weeks, street people have turning up dead in Whitechapel. Most have turned a blind eye to the deaths of these impoverished few, even though the natures of their deaths are so outlandish. These aren't slashings, shootings or beatings. The victims have been found missing their hearts. This is no surgical removal, either; the organs have been ripped from their rib cages with force. But last night, a well-to-do merchant off of Cooper's Row was found murdered in a similar fashion. Now the middle-class have taken notice of these deaths, and are demanding an investigation. Scotland Yard refuses to look into them, for reasons unstated (but rumours are the order came down from Buckingham). They are, however, willing to put together a special team to investigate the matter. 4. ExplicitEpisode 041: Sherwood Review | WARNING: Instances of very strong language may offend some listeners. Accidental Survivors: the Modern Gaming Podcast All music in podcast by Mindscape Music 1. Geek Week Fraser's digging the viral websites up for the Watchmen movie, including I Watch the Watchmen and the New Frontiersmen. The New Frontiersman is also on Twitter as NewFrontiersman. One of his players gave him the d20 Modern Menace Manual (thanks Eric!). Chris was pretty busy, geek-wise lately. He finished Fallout 3 and thought the ending rather fitting with the story even though it's rather abrupt. He also started playing Fable 2, which is a lot of fun. He got out to the movies and saw My Bloody Valentine 3D which he did a review of on our site. He's glad to finally have Supernatural back on again. But the big highlight for Chris was finally starting up the Dark Heresy campaign that's been in the talks now for a few months. Also check out the trailer for a new Tim Burton film called 9 it's another animated movie. Rob got into the beta for Champions Online and though he's restricted by an NDA. He also started playing a 14-day trial of City of Heroes just for comparison. David picked up Mortal Kombat vs DC for the PS3 and considers it awesome. In addition, he's started a project in LittleBigPlanet, attempting to build a simple Tower Defense game. He's been working with his fiancee on a client's website and now has a passing mastery of how to make Google Maps work for me. 2. Feature - Review of Sherwood: The Legend of Robin Hood This Robin Hood supplement is published by Battlefield Press. Sherwood is written by Marc Gacy and Wil Upchurch, with various public domain art and some art by V. Shane and OtherWorld Creations, Inc. Chris's opinion of PDF value 4/5 (for print price, 2.5/5) Rob's opinion of PDF value 3.5/5 (for print price, 2.5/5) Dave's opinion of PDF value 2/5 Fraser's opinion of PDF value 2/5 3. The Hook March 2009. U.S. President Barack Obama finalizes the draft that orders the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to be closed within one year. His administration also starts to setup a program to determine how to process the currently existing prisoners. November 2009 all communication from Guantanamo Bay cease. It is later relayed to the public that it was a problem with the generator and nothing more. January 2010 a report is leaked to the press that an investigative force was sent in to discover the source of the black out and communications were lost with them also. March 2010 the characters are contacted to go in as a strike force and find out what is going on. 4. Podcast News In Our Time: Robin Hood One of Fraser's favourite podcasts, BBC's In Our Time with Melvyn Bragg has a great episode from 2003 on Robin Hood. His guests are Stephen Knight, Professor of English Literature at Cardiff University and author of Robin Hood: A Mythic Biography (Cornell University Press, 2003); Thomas Hahn, Professor of English Literature at the University of Rochester, New York; and Dr Juliette Wood, Secretary of the Folklore Society. You can listen to the episode online. 5. Feedback In case you haven't heard, the Accidental Survivors Podcast is holding a contest for modern gaming ideas sponsored by RPG Objects. The idea can be anything, as big as a setting or campaign to as small as a single character or piece of equipment. Use your imagination! What about a criminal organization or an evil corporation? Perhaps a cocktail! Just about anything is grist for this mill. The idea should be presented in a one-page synopsis of no more than 500 words. If the idea includes a mechanical component, those mechanics need to be described in a system-neutral manner--so that an individual who does not know the system will understand the impact of the mechanics. Each submission must be in PDF format and include the entrant's name, address, email address and telephone number. There is a limit of one submission per person. The deadline for entries is Saturday January 31, 2009. Send your submissions to accidental@swordsedgepublishing.ca. Winners will be announced Tuesday, February 17, 2009. There will be three winners--first, second and third place. The winners will be contacted by email before officially announced on the Accidental Survivors podcast. The prizes include print copies of Blood and Fist, Blood and Relics, and Modern Backdrops from RPG Objects. | 1/17/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitCraptastic Episode 39 Cuts | Accidental Survivors: the Modern Gaming Podcast All music in podcast by Mindscape Music Too long for bloopers, too crappy for the actual podcast, Fraser took a bunch of stuff from the cutting room floor and shoved it into your MP3 player. Chris said it was all golden. Let's see how golden that might be. This is worse than most Accidental Survivors podcasts, so if you value your sanity at all, you'll walk away. Do not play this around people, even if they don't speak English. The profanity and insanity will infect even those who can't comprehend this pure horror. ExplicitEpisode 039: Merry Christmas, Accidental Survivors | WARNING: Instances of very strong language may offend some listeners. Accidental Survivors: the Modern Gaming Podcast All music in podcast by Mindscape Music 1. Geek Week It was Rob's birthday! He got Pandemic (and has managed to play once so far), and got Grand Theft Auto 4 for PC (and has spoken about it a bit on his blog, Gamer Dad Weekly ). Upcoming this week, He's getting together with The New Survivors (named thusly just to piss off Fraser) for Warhammer 40k Dark Heresey campaign's group template planning session. He got Fraser and Dave hooked on TweetDeck, and he's following people like Greg Grunberg (@greggrunberg ), Wil Wheaton (@wilw ) and Felicia Day (@feliciaday ). And David Gallant (@davidsgallant). Dave came along via recording to let us know that since we last met, he's become an Assistant Manager in Training at EB Games (store #1700, Queen st. & Airport rd. Brampton, if anyone wants to see a real live podcast-person) fighting off angry mothers desparate for Wii's and Wii Fit's. He's still playing some LittleBigPlanet, as well as Ana's Christmas gift, a JRPG called Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World. Also nearly finished a great Capcom story game on the DS, Ace Attorney: Apollo Justice. He's getting buried in Twitter messages thanks to TweetDeck, struggling financially to make ends meet, and being a human pincushion for his three cats. Fraser's got his True20 Viking campaign going well. His Snowflake Project with Jonathan Holmberg is moving forward. And if you are looking for Geek Gifts, check out 10 Holiday Gaming Gifts for under $20 from RPG Blog II. Chris is getting prepped for starting up a Dark Heresy game he'll be running. He got a free 4 pack of beer from Moosehead for Christmas - yay BEER! (Moosehead, last of the "big" Canadian beers). He watched Death Race , and says it didn't suck. He says Role Models is fantastic and Zack and Miri Make a Porno is also really good. We disturbed him while he was praying that Dog Soldiers 2: Fresh Meat finally gets some forward momentum. Chuck got a Wii (cause it's awesome, which is why it's still hot), and he's got to remember to give Rob and Chris his Wii number. He is also checking out Legend of the Seeker. What am I doing making podcasts? I Should Be Writing . 2. Feature - Merry Christmas, Accidental Survivors! (no linkage) Dave's List Games: Civilization Revolution on PS3, Penny Arcade Adventures: On The Rain Slick Precipice of Darkness, Episode 1 on PSN, PS3 chat pad. Movies: HDTV. Please. ExplicitEpisode 038: Getting Modernized | WARNING: Instances of very strong language may offend some listeners. Accidental Survivors: the Modern Gaming Podcast All music in podcast by Mindscape Music 1. Geek Week Fraser wants you to know all about The Midnight Charity Project. We are in the season of giving! Without the Monarch Comics Briefing, Fraser wouldn't know what's going on in comics, and he certainly wouldn't know that Warren Ellis is writing the Astonishing X-Men. Fraser follows Immortal Iron Fist faithfully, and he really enjoyed Northlanders. If anyone cares, Fraser's True20 Vikings campaign journal is on line. He'll try to keep that up to date. A couple of articles already exist. Chuck's working on an RPG using the setting from his web-novel, Hellstrom Voyage. The conversation continues at Narrative Control. 2. Feature - Getting Modernized With a tip of the hat to Dave! Danger International Top Secret S. I. The Albenistan Series Dog Soldiers The Mummy To get out of print games, Chuck recommends Noble Knight. Listen to the novel, Heart of the Hunter. 3. The Hook So, let's say we know we have a player who digs superhero comics, a player who digs Indiana Jones, and a player who digs James Bond. All are great modern concepts, and if you mash them up, you might be able to entice all three players into a modern game. Let's call it "Planetary Jones, International Men of Mystery." Planetary is a comic by--you guessed it--Warren Ellis that follows a group of "Archaeologists of the Impossible", tracking down the world's secret history. They are also superheroes, but not the kind with colourful costumes. That hits our superhero quotient. We're going to change Planetary and turn them into a group of super-spies in the 1950s, possibly even run by MI-6--very James Bond. This team goes up again a resurgent Nazi threat based in Argentina that is trying to acquire occult items of power in order to create an unstoppable army and usher in the Fourth Reich. And there we have our Indiana Jones angle. You could even fashion the Nazi menace as a kind of riff on SPECTRE or SMERSH, to further the JB quotient. And, of course, their first mission might be the team trying to recover the Blutfahne. 4. Podcast News The History of Rome Returns! I've spoken about the History of Rome podcast before, and when I did, the updates stopped coming. I hope I'm not jinxing this by letting you all know there are new episodes, and they are maintaining the level of quality I remember. The website has moved to thehistoryofrome.typepad.com. In case you didn't know, the History of Rome is a weekly podcast tracing the history of the Roman Empire, beginning with Aeneas's arrival in Italy and ending (someday) with the exile of Romulus Augustulus, last Emperor of the Western Roman Empire. That website again is thehistoryofrome.typepad.com 5. ExplicitEpisode 037 - Wars and Rumours of Wars | WARNING: Instances of very strong language may offend some listeners. Accidental Survivors: the Modern Gaming Podcast All music in podcast by Mindscape Music 0. What's Better Than a Cow? Two Cows! Don't Forget about Cow 2: The Sequel 1. Geek Week Rob's been playing Fallout 3. And playing, and playing, and playing... and playing... Chuck's been writing a board game called Dungeon Dwellers, and RPG Objects is going all printified with Amazon BookSurge Fraser is hyped by the new Star Trek Trailer at Apple Trailers and is looking forward to his Viking True20 game. You can read the campaign journal if you really are that bored. A list of 12 RPGs every gamer should play before they die. If you're ready to attack the darkness, check out the KORE RPG podcast. 2. Feature - Wars and Rumours of Wars Are the PCs involved in the Siege of Mafeking or are maybe meeting Winston Churchill during the Second Boer War In World War I, you could run games set in the Arab Revolt, there's espionage, or you could go the alt-history Soldiers and Spellfighters route. Commandos, SAS or the Red Orchestra (perhaps attempting to retrieve the Blutfahne) during World War II The Military Assistance Command, Vietnam - Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG), riverine warfare, or just plain weird stuff (like the Korean movie R-Point) in the Vietnam War. Did you just rediscover beer? Time to discover Return to Northmoor. 3. The Hook What if the PCs are part of an SAS team (one of the Special Raiding Squadrons) in Italy in Aug/Sept 1943, only to intercept information that Otto Skorzeny, famed German commando, is in the area. This would be near Gran Sasso d'Italia, a mountain located in the Abruzzo region of central Italy. Mussolini is being held at Campo Imperatore. The actual rescue of Mussolini by Skorzeny took place on Sept 12, but can your SRS foil Skorzeny's attempt? Perhaps even capture the German hero? 4. Podcast News Heart of the Hunter Completed. Heart of the Hunter, Sam Chupp's fantasy novel, is now complete. Sam describes this novel as being in the style of Steven Brust's Jhereg novels, using pastiches and cognates of real-world cultures in order to convey a sense of culture and place. You can listen to the novel over at heartofthehunter.com Veni Vidi Venatus The fine gentlemen over at Spooky Outhouse Productions are organizing something they call "One Shotter Day", or Veni Vidi Venatus (I came, I saw, I gamed), which is a day which several gaming stores will be offering one-shots of various RPGs and board games. There might be something set up in your area, so go check out the forums at www.podgecast.com. I'm going to be trying to set something up in Kitchener, so if you're interested, let me know on the forums or via email. 5. Ordinary complications, like family problems, can play a big part in a campaign like this, since the PCs will have the added complication of a secret identity--trying to keep their assignment and their home life separate. 5. Podcast News A. The Material World looks at Tunguska On the 30th June 1908, a huge fireball hurtled towards the Tunguska River region of Siberia. The explosion that followed was as powerful as 1000 Hiroshima bombs and knocked down an estimated 80 million trees. But 100 years later scientists are yet to find an impact crater or tell-tale meteorite remains. So what happened? The Material World is a BBC Radio podcast. In this episode, Host Quentin Cooper is joined by Dr Phil Bland and Gareth Collins from Imperial College London to find out. You can learn more at the website. B. Brilliant Gameologists In their own words, Brilliant Gameologists is a podcast about tabletop games and the people who play them. Helping you play like you have to, play like you have to and play like you have two. The Hook OpCom VULTURE The PCs are drawn into a trip or mission to the town of Iana Sarat in Mondovia, a fictional state in Eastern Europe. If they are military or spies, they are assigned to a mission, if they are private individuals, they are either hired to escort a subject they will meet there, or the NPC is a friend or other acquaintance that calls on their aid. Stories of lights in the skies and unexplained explosions the previous night meet the PCs. They meet Piotr Korensky, who is their contact. He indicates a belief that they are a “recovery team” with “Vulture.” He passes on a map and coordinates some 40 kilometres south west of Iana Sarat. Before he can explain any further, he is assassinated by a rifle shot. The shooter, if captured, carries a letter stating “Provide assistance to RAVEN acting under orders. Recovery operation underway. OpCom VULTURE may intervene. RAVEN is to terminate this threat.” It is only signed “Majestic” The map leads to a valley in the mountains where a strange aircraft has crashed. The occupants are not human. Here, the PCs meet Devoe, and he explains that they have been sent here through the machinations of Operational Command VULTURE, a secret military command created by elements of NATO and the Warsaw Pact in the 1960s to oppose the Majestic 12 conspiracy. Vulture adapts and then spreads alien technology, preparing to battle the aliens who have infiltrated Earth societies through the help of Majestic. The PCs are now caught in the middle of the battle between the conspirators of Majestic 12 and OpCom VULTURE, possibly the saviours of humanity. Devoe can act as their contact and feed them information. But since this is the shadowy world of black ops and conspiracies, is VULTURE or Devoe really who they say they are? Is Majestic 12 really the threat Devoe states it is? That’s up to you. 5. Podcast News A. Penny Arcade + PvP + 4e = Good Times! The Hook This week, I want to provide a hook to lead into a gritty, conspiracy campaign. It's shamelessly stolen from the first two episodes on the new season of the Unit. The characters belong to a special operations force, perhaps Delta, perhaps JTF-2 or the SAS. They might even belong to something blacker, like the Increment or the CIA Special Activities Division. On their first adventure, they are tasked with escorting a spook on an "interdiction" mission against a drug kingpin's complex. The target doesn't look very drug complex-like—in fact it looks like a very nice home with large grounds. During the mission, the team is confronted by an individual whom the spook shoots. The spook searches the place and cracks a safe, all the time deflecting questions from the team—if they ask any. On return, the team is called before a government oversight committee. It turns out, the “drug kingpin? was the defence minister of a government on poor terms with the PCs' government. Their superiors deny any knowledge of the mission, indicating that the team went rogue. The PCs are hung out to dry and it looks like they are going to do prison time. Their commanding officer, who was left out in the cold as much as the team, orders them to evade arrest and go underground. He's going to take the heat and the PCs need to figure out what is going on. The truth is that the team have been chosen to take the fall for an operation undertaken by a shadow government conspiracy. The mission was an intelligence operation to retrieve important information from the unfriendly government that the conspiracy feared might be used against them. That information could lead the team to the people behind the conspiracy, could clear their names, and ensure their CO doesn't end up in prison. The campaign has the team following clues and getting closer and closer to the heart of the conspiracy. Finally, they are able to take out the heads of the conspiracy. Like a snake, the shadow government dies, but the team can't go back out into the open after that. They become an arm's length black ops team, contractors for their government, doing dirty-work but only when they are sure the aims are righteous. It's kind of like the Unit meets the A-Team. 5. Podcast News A. The End of the Round Table and Misfit Brew The House of the Harping Monkey is a little bit quieter and less crowded with the demise of two much-beloved podcasts, the Round Table and Misfit Brew. The Round Table especially will be missed, though Misfit Brew was a great podcast, the Round Table was one of my 'must listen' podcasts. I wouldn't put it in a queue to listen to, I would listen to it as soon as I downloaded it. It's a sad day, but all the participants will be visible in the Podosphere and in the RPG community. Maybe we can actually coerce them onto the Accidental Survivors at some point. 6. Feedback You can email us at accidental@swordsedgepubl | 11/12/07 | Free | View In iTunes |
