Almost always worth the download
Amy's show never ceases to amaze me. She is fair minded while dealing with many of the most difficult issues of our age. More than one interview has had me in tears as I found myself coming to a point of view that was entirely new. It's no exaggeration to say "Democracy Now" has changed my life in positive ways, and made me a better person.
Absolutely essential news source - required listening
This daily program is the most important news show in North America. They frequently break (i.e. first to report) major stories, and provide perspectives and give voice to people deliberately ignored or suppressed by the corporate mainstream media, including domestic stories covered widely outside the US but blacked out at home. They have extended interviews with major figures and that are deep and unflinching. Their reporting is highly professional, in-depth, and wide-ranging, and they invite all sides of a debate to present their side of the story. The perfect antidote to the shallow, short-attention-span soundbites that pass for news in mainstream radio and TV.
DemocracyNow is Unique
DemocracyNow is unique because of the people who are interviewed on the show. It's not Amy Goodman giving her opinion, her role is to ask the important questions. If it can be criticized it is because most of the people interviewed are against war and in favour of peace and justice. That's certainly not a problem for me, and often they ask for comment from the other side and only get a refusal. Some of the best shows are when they do get both sides to debate, such as a recent debate between an Israeli air force captain 'refusenik' and a member of the Israeli 'Peace' party in favor of the war crimes in Lebanon continuing. Another criticism is that they focus too much on war and politics, and are not nearly critical enough of the modern medical treatment system which is currently killing as many people. Their weak treatment of the ICC 'guinea pig kids' orphanage scandal was too little, too late, for example. Medicine is equally as corrupt as politics, besieged by the forces of money, causing corruption in clinical trials, marketing of medications and so on.
