#087: Roundtable – The Value of Music | The value of music is undeniable. Music is woven into the fabric of every human culture. The digital age has made more music available for cheaper than ever before. This is an exciting time for music listeners because of the unprecedented variety available. This is an amazing time for musicians because they have access to millions of potential fans through the internet. The flipside to all this availability is decline in monetary value assigned to music. People expect more for less. As a musician, should you find hope or dismay in the state of the industry? The CD Baby Podcasters find both and everything in between in this lively discussion which revolves around last weeks interview with Chris Anderson. Also, our listeners weigh in with good points, agreements and disagreements. Don’t miss this one! | 3/23/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

#086: Chris Anderson – all about FREE | Giving away music for free: does it help or hinder an artist’s career? There are those who believe that giving away music devalues it and makes it disposable. Others believe that free music is an essential marketing tool that artists can use to expand their reach and build their fan base. Both Schools of thought offer valid points. We’ve invited Chris Anderson, Author of the book FREE: The Future of a Radical Price to discuss his views on the subject. His book explores the way businesses and content creators are using ‘Free’ as a way to expand their reach. The interview just scratches the surface of the ideas covered in Chris’ book, so I encourage you to check out the book which you can find at the links below, and yes, the audio book version is free. #084: Strategic partnerships for your music | A strategic partnership is a relationship between the artist/band and a company that wants to use music in a way that enhances the products they promote. With all the doom and gloom about the music industry that’s out there, the one big positive that usually gets overshadowed is that music consumption is at an all time high. Businesses, companies, and organizations all recognize that fact, and they’re turning to music to help sell their products. The company gets great music to help their branding, and the artist gets access to a much larger audience. In this episode, you’re going to hear from two different independent artists that used a strategic partnership to help move their music career forward. The first is Steve from the band Hullabaloo and the second is Lisa Lynne, who had an amazing partnership opportunity land in her lap after simply listing her album on CD Baby for sale. We hope these stories get your creative wheels spinning on new ways you can reach people with your music. #082: Brian Mazzaferi – I Fight Dragons | Brian is a member of the Band I Fight Dragons, who after their first year, find themselves signing a major label record deal. What’s interesting is the events that led them to that deal were very focused DIY tactics that built an enormous amount of buzz and started generating consistently strong sales for their music. We’ve talked to numerous solo artists in past episodes that have built a full time career going completely the DIY route, but in Brian’s opinion it’s still tough as a band that might have 4-5 members to generate enough income on their own to sustain a living for that many people with out some sort of larger machine behind them. He highlights that for bands we might still be in a middle area between the old music business models and the models of the future. I think you’ll find Brian’s insights to be thought provoking and possibly a slightly different take on where things are in the industry. Plus he shares some great DIY tips that has helped them make strong connections with the fans. #080: Howard Massey – Behind the Glass | Howard Massey is a recording engineer and producer turned writer and author. He authored the books Behind the Glass Volume 1 & 2 that chronicles the many hours he spent talking to music producers from all different recording backgrounds. Investigating how they go about recording and making great albums. People like George Martin, and Daniel Lanois, to name a few. It covers all the inside detail people want to know about the actual process of getting in the studio and creating good music. Volume one was written almost ten years ago, so it’s interesting to see how the changes in the music industry effect the tone of the conversations. #078: Ryan States – Remote collaboration | As we head into the next decade armed with faster internet connections and more bandwidth, it’s exciting to see the innovative ways artists are starting to collaborate with each other. Entire albums are now being recorded by exchanging files across the web which has allowed incredible access to musicians who were formerly only available if you were in the right town. Ryan States got a job playing keyboard in the circus, which keeps him out on the road constantly, and in years past, many musicians were faced with the decision of whether to stay in town and pursue their own music career, or go out on the road for someone else and get paid. Even thought Ryan is often in remote locations and makes his home on a train, he’s had some pretty amazing musicians play on his new album, just by exchanging files over the web. Is this how the album of the future will be made? You can hear Ryan’s new album here - http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/ryanstates | 12/16/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

#076: Corey Smith – The grass roots approach to success | Corey Smith made headlines when his independent music career slowly grew into a multi-million dollar business, selling out large venues normally reserved for those with chart topping hits. No, it was not some sort of internet trickery that built his following, Corey simply toured diligently and worked hard to make honest connections with his audience. As his fan base grew, he stayed focused on building that connection and being intentional with his business decisions. It’s also important to note that his grass roots success was accomplished without any radio airplay or push from a label. Lots to learn in this episode, so get ready to take notes! #020 : Tom Simonson – Artist Manager and Consultant | Artist management may not be the first thing on your mind when you’ve got your amp cranked up and your creativity flowing. But management is just as essential to cultivating and maintaining a successful music career as is producing killer new material. It also takes a lot of time, business skills, and connections in the music world. So, how do you manage the business side of your career and leave room for making music? This conundrum is why we sometimes turn to bookers, promoters, or artist managers to help us along the way. But is it really prudent to hand over certain responsibilities to a manager in exchange for 15-20% of your hard-earned profits? What if this manager could double or triple your music related income and get you really sweet gigs and publicity? These concerns and more are addressed as Kevin interviews savvy artist manager and consultant, Tom Simonson. Tom shares his knowlege from both a corporate and indie perspective, helping us decide whether it’s better to look for a manager or to manage ourselves. His credits include Fastball, Mathew Sweet and David Wilcox. #018 : Duff McKagan – Lose Your Illusions | What does Duff McKagan, bass player for Guns N Roses and Velvet Revolver, know about indie music? More than you might think. All musicians–famous, infamous, or unknown–begin from the same basic place. A place where desire, vision, and ambition move their hands to fret, hit, pluck, or punish an instrument to a perhaps obsessive degree. Duff is no exception. Just like the rest of us, he has struggled to find success in his musical journey. In today’s episode we get two stories: the story of how Kevin, our host, comes to interview one of his musical heroes, and also how that hero has built a successful career based on some of the same DIY and indie values that we speak so much about on the show. Join us for this special interview as Duff reveals how one of the greatest rock records (ever) came together, but even more importantly, how a successful musician was made along the way. | 12/10/07 | Free | View In iTunes |

#016 : Dylan Magierek – Who Needs Record Labels? | In a time when worldwide distribution is available through companies like CD Baby for less then a pack of new bass strings, what is the use of a record label for an indie musician? How valuable are record companies to the indie music scene in this day and age? Before you sign on the dotted line, Join Kevin in this truly valuable investigation into the pros and cons of having a label behind you. You may be surprised at what you learn. #012 : I AM JEN – The World Wide Web As Your Stage | It’s easy to promote in the real world right? All you need is a killer demo, a staple gun and a winning personality. But what if you’re not the outspoken type? What if you’re more the seclusive mad-scientist sort who spends long nights tweeking soundloops or rerecording that xylophone melody 100 times without a thought to whether it could be performed live. Playing live and touring is still the best way to make yourself known, but more and more artists are making their careers online. With billions of music fans scouring the net everyday for new and exciting music, how come you’re not selling millions of albums–if not millions, why not thousands? You’ve got your own website. You’re on CD Baby, MySpace, iTUNES, Napster, Facebook, Friendster and more. So what’s the secret? Maybe it’s time to think outside of the box. Maybe you’re just one good idea away from selling thousands of CDs without ever leaving your bedroom. As we continue with the topic of using video to promote your music, we’ll be talking to Jen Scaturro (aka I AM JEN). Her project, The Broken EP, had been available online for almost two years, but it wasn’t until she released a homemade music video that her sales really gained online momentum. #010 : Moving Rushmore – Drums, Bass, Guitar and Video | Moving Rushmore started out a little different than most bands. When the band was just taking shape, they decided that video would be such a crucial part of what they do, that Tim (Their video guy) had to be a full fledge band member. Before they even had a bass player, they had Tim. So what does a band do with a videographer? Film everything of course! From the beginning, Patrick, Jason, Brent, Dave, Tim and later Kirk, have documented their journey on video and released it to the world in the the form of a video podcast(vidcast for short). Throw in a front page feature on iTunes, and you have the making of some serious musical momentum! Their story is a great example of how you can turn a good idea and a little DIY ingenuity, into thousands of new fans. To download the MR vidcast from iTunes, click HERE!
