Drawing on recently published papers, Burkhauser shows that changes in the standard of living of the middle class and other parts of the income distribution are extremely sensitive to various assumptions about how income is defined as well as whether you look at tax units or households. He shows that under one set of assumptions, there has been no change in median income, but under a different and equally reasonable set of assumptions, median income has grown 36%. White argues that most regulation tries to limit the choices of banks to restrain them from making choices that create instability or fragility. One view is that there is no burden of the public debt as long as the purchasers of U.S. debt are fellow Americans. In that case, the argument goes, we owe it to ourselves. Drawing on the work of James Buchanan, particularly his book Public Principles of Public Debt: A Defense and Restatement, Boudreaux argues that there is a burden of the debt and it is borne by future taxpayers. Boudreaux argues that all public expenditures have a cost--the different financing mechanisms simply determine who bears the burden of that cost. Boudreaux discusses the political attractiveness of debt finance because the taxes lie in the future and those who will pay for them may not be clearly identified. Rustici argues that this Keynesian approach that looks at aggregate spending misses a crucial mechanism for understanding the impact of Smoot-Hawley. Rustici focuses on the impact of Smoot Hawley on bank closings and the money supply. Smoot-Hawley launched an international trade war that reduced world trade dramatically. This had large concentrated regional effects in the United States and around the world in areas that depended on trade. Those were the areas where the first banks collapsed, contracting the money supply via the fractional reserve banking system. Economics is interesting!
This is an excellent podcast. As a layperson, I find the discussions are interesting and informative, but not too jargon laden as to be incomprehensible to the non-specialist.
Neoliberal economics 101
Comment in response to your Podcast interview with Don Boudreaux on January 21, 2008. "...growing, prosperous economy that we all enjoy"? Boudreaux, you mean the middle- to upper-class American constituency, the CEOs and managers who profit from alienation of labour, from outsourced, indeed exploited, labour? Are you truly including everyone in your "all"? How about the Mexicans who provide countless products and services at exploited wages? You think that they prospering and enjoying America's growing economy? You know they aren't. Are you assuming that Mexico’s bordering towns, ravaged by NAFTA's insidious Chapter 11 which protects the rights of American corporations from Mexican legislation usually at the expense of the local populations, is non-existent (ie, Metalclad)? Or perhaps you just don't care about the adverse effects of NAFTA and neoliberal global trade in general (ie, suppressed wages, dire working conditions, slave labour (see GAP and India))? Perhaps a better question to ask is this: Do we American's deserve to benefit at the expense of the exploited poor (ie, Chinese, Mexican, whoever)? If so, what gives us this right? What makes us more worthy? You should do a Podcast on this topic. Good luck ever justifying our current global economy. Although I clearly disagree with some of your economic and ideological beliefs with regards to global trade, I do appreciate your Podcast as it gives me ample proof (which I will source) that ignorant academia exists even in this so-called civilised country. Three stars for effort.
Fantastic Intellectual experience
Coming as an outsider to the economic profession I can simply be amazed at the intellectual journey this Podcast has made me experienced.
