| 1 | VideoNamaste Yoga 129 Beginner’s Series Preparatory Poses with Dr Melissa West | http://www.melissawest.com Starting this week we are commencing a new series of classes for beginners. Over the next six weeks we will explore all the facets of a yoga class starting this week with preparatory poses. These are the poses that we use to prepare our bodies to get into the larger yoga postures such as standing postures, backbends, inversions, twists and forward folds. We even use these poses to open our bodies to breath and our bodies and minds to explore thoughts and emotions. Also during these classes we will return to some of the core philosophies of my teachings. Starting with our physical experience from my training at Esther Myers and their core teaching of breathing, grounding and spinal elongation and then expanding to our thoughts, emotions and spirit from my training with Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy and that infamous question, “What’s happening now?” The simplicity of these classes will bring us back to basics and give us the space to unravel tension from our bodies open up to hear the messages they are trying to speak to us. | 5/26/12 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 2 | VideoNamaste Yoga 128 Ganesh Teaches About Humility with Dr. Melissa West | http://www.melissawest.com This final class in the series of classes on the mythology of Ganesh teaches us about humility. Each of these stories are archetypal and teaches us something about ourselves. In this story, Kubera, the God of wealth, invites Shiva, the God of destruction and his wife Parvarti to dinner in order to show of his riches. Shiva and Parvarti turn down Kuberas invitation and send Ganesh instead. Kubera is a bit wounded and insulted insisting that he could feed thousands of children like Ganesh. Ganesh goes to Kubera's palance and true to his form sits down and eats all the food placed in front of him. As was custom, more and more food is placed in front of Ganesh, as his appetite seems to be insatiable! Ganesh eats and eats until there was no more food to be found and Kubera is forced to send his troops to find food from surrounding villages. Ganesh was still very hungry and actually began to eat all the furniture. Kubera became very frightened! Ganesha told Kubera, "You promised my parents you would feed me! Now I have to eat you up as I am still very hungry!" Kubera ran away and pleaded with Shiva to save him from Ganesha. Shiva advised Kubera to give up his pride and serve Ganesha a simple handful of rice. Kubera went back to his palace. Ganesha's stomach had become very huge, but the child as still hungry. When Kuberay served a cup of rice, with humility, Ganesha's hunger was indeed satisfied. This story teaches us that a handful of rice given with love and eaten with love is more important and filling than all the wealth of Kuvera flaunted to impress the world and all the Gods. In today's class we will practice humility with half moon balancing pose and triangle pose. We will also practice turning inwards and listening to the messages of our own bodies and following our breath. This class offers and opportunity to open your hips, a "humble" yet extremely effective backbend called sphynx pose that should be a counter pose to life, as well as Kubera mudra. | 5/16/12 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 3 | VideoNamaste Yoga 127 Ganesh Honours his Parents with Dr. Melissa West | http://www.melissawest.com Ganesha had a brother whose name was Kartikeya. Ganesha was very clever and sweet natured, where as Kartikeya was very short tempered. Both of them used to play on the mountains and sometimes they used to quarrel. One time they had a huge fight. During this quarrel both thought each other was guilty and to settle the matter they approached their parents. Shiva and Parvati heard both sides of their story. Suddenly Shiva had and idea, "Children," he said to them, "Let's settle this with a contest. Both of you will have a race around the world and the one who comes back first will be considered right. The one who comes back last will be considered wrong. Do you agree?" "Yes! Yes!," Ganesh and Kartikeya agreed! Kartikeya rode a peacock and was very fast, while Gaensh only used a little rat for riding. Kartikeya was confident we would win the race because his peacock was much faster than Ganesh's rat. Kartikeya immediately jumped on his peacock and rode very fast as he could. Ganesha first had a look at his big stomach and then at his little rat. He was sure that he can never win the race. Then Kartikeya was already away with his peacock. Ganesha sat down defeated and began to think. Suddenly, he had a good idea. Ganesh asked Shiva and Parvati to sit together and quickly walked around them three times. No sooner had Ganesh circled his parents than Kartikeya returned on his peacock after travelling around the world proudly boasting to his parents, "here I come! I've won!" "No," Ganesh said firmly, "our parents are the mother and father of the world, so going around them is just like going around the world! I have done it three times, but you have done it only once, so that make me the winner!" Ganesh looked to Shiva and Parvati asking, "Am I right, or am I wrong?" "Ganesha is right," said Parvati to Kartikeya," he has won the race !" This story teaches us about intelligence and honour. Ganesh takes the time to tune in to his inner knowing and seek higher knowledge before making rash decisions or having a temper tantrum or losing his cool like his brother. Through this story we learn to respond rather than react. In the story Ganesh honours his parents and in this honouring and intelligent response wins the contest over speed and physical skill. In our class today we will practice honouring ourselves and honouring the human spirit through the warrior poses. We will also work a bit with peacock preparatory poses in honour of Ganesh’s brother. We will work with patience with paschimottanasana and the mudra of inner self as well. | 5/11/12 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 4 | VideoNamaste Yoga 126: Ganesh and the Durva Grass | http://www.melissawest.com Continuing on with our series of Ganesh classes this class explores how our yoga practice brings us closer to our True Selves. The legend associated with Durva goes like this: Long, long ago, a ruthless demon named Anlasur was a really, really bad demon. He was so terrible that the earth would tremble by his voice and his eyes used to emit fired. He created havoc around the world, not even the Gods were spared. Indra tried to control Anlasure several times by engaging him in battle, but Anlasur was even beyond Indra's control. Panic ensued and all the Gods went to Lord Shankar for help. Lord Shankar told them only Ganesh could help them. Since Ganesh had a huge pot belly, he could actually swallow Anlasur because there was enough space in his belly to accommodate the demon. All the Gods prayed to Ganesh to rescue them from the terror of Analasura. Pleased by their prayers, Ganesh agreed to help them. Ganesh took the form of a small boy and started war with Analasura. Analasura's eyes oozed fireballs and destroyed Ganesha's surroundings. A tough battled ensued, but eventually Ganesh swallowed Analasura. Unfortunately the heat in his stomach began causing agony to Ganesh. He became so restless he could not even lie down. Indra tried to give Ganesh the moon to wear on his head to cool him off, but that did not help. Vishnu gave Ganesh his lotus, but that did not help. Shankara removed a cobra from his neck and tied it to Ganesha's hip, but even that didn't help. Varuna, the rain God showered Ganesh with plenty of water, but that didn't work. Ganesh continued to suffer from the heat. At that time 88. 000 sages came and each one performed archana over Ganesh with 21 Durva grass each and miraculously Ganesha was cured. The word Durva is derived from the words duhu and avam. "Duhuavam" means that which is far away and means that which brings closer. According to this meaning, Durva is that which brings the distant pure spiritual particles of Ganesh closer. In our own practice today we will focus on how our yoga practice brings us closer to our True Selves. We will practice a dramatic re-enactment of the story with hip opening postures and postures focuses on the watery second chakra. We will practice half moon balancing posture, crescent moon, full moon, dark moon, lotus, cobra, sitali breath (cooling breath), and walking meditation on the grass in our bare feet. | 5/3/12 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 5 | VideoNamaste Yoga 125 Ganesh Teaches About Discernment with Dr. Melissa West | http://www.melissawest.com Sage Vyasa was meditating in the Himalayas. Lord Brahma appeared before him and asked him to write the Mahabharatham for the benefit of all. Sage Vyasa said that he could not compose the verse and write it down too and therefore asked for the help of someone wise, who would write down as he sang. Brahma asked sage Vyasa to pray to Lord Ganesha to help him. Ganesha told Vyasa that he had enormous work to do and hence he would write it down, only if Vyasa was quick in singing it. For his turn, Sage Vyasa requested that Ganesha should understand the meaning of the verse and only then put it down in writing. Vyasa started singing. Whenever he felt Ganesha was writing too fast for him, he would come up with a difficult verse, thus by the time Ganesha could decipher the meaning, he would have composed several more verses in his mind. Lord Ganesha wrote on Mount Meru using his tusk. Sage Vyasa is supposed to have sung 8,800 granthams, which were difficult for Ganesha to decipher. He has himself stated that Ganesha, Sage Vyasa himself and his Sugan are probably the only ones who know the meaning of those 8,800 granthams. Only the remaining one lakh granthams is assumed to be on the earth. The Mahabharatham is considered the fifth Veda. What should we take away from this story? Even the great and wise Ganesh showed incredible discernment. He didn’t trouble us with tones of esoteric knowledge and books and books of philosophy. He distilled the knowledge down into one book to be taken away. This is what the eagle does by soaring high in the sky, backs up to gain perspective. Today in class we will work with variations on eagle's pose. We can do this in our lives too, we can back away from a situation to gain perspective. We can also turn inwards in meditation into ourselves to find our own internal answers, blocking out all the noise of the world for perspective. Sometimes we need to zoom out, sometimes we need to zoom in and we can see the entire universe is waiting inside of us. We will practice working with this perspective in our class today. This class is dedicated to the very Happy 40th Birthday of Elisa Richmond!!! | 4/26/12 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 6 | VideoNamaste Yoga 124 Ganesh Remover of Obstacles with Dr. Melissa West | http://www.melissawest.com In episode 124 of Namaste Yoga we will return to another Ganesh story. In this story Ganesh removes the reckless abandon of the destruction being caused by a son completely distraught over the loss of his Father. In these stories, the Hindu deities represent aspects of ourselves and their behaviour represent how we can sometimes be reckless with ourselves internally at the times when we need to be the most gentle. This story teaches us to be gentle and compassionate with ourselves in our own healing. In the story, Ganesh removes all negativity. In our own lives we can use our own resources including yoga to move emotions through our body. In this class we will use yoga postures such as apanasana, lion's breath and mudras to help move toxins, challenging emotions, waste and anything we need to let go of, through our bodies. Yoga postures such as dancer, Goddess, and tiger will offer a fun dramatic re-enactment of the humorous parts of the story and allow us to laugh even in the most difficult times of our lives. This class is dedicated to the loving memory of Namaste Yogi Valerie's brother Benjamin Thomas Hein. Poem: "I went to the top of the world today, to see what I could find, and all I saw for miles and miles, were things you left behind. Your spirit was high up in the clouds, moving carefree through the sky. Your voice whispered through the leaves, saying 'sister, don't you cry.' The river contained your courage, never knowing when to cease. Even your laughter echoed through a soaring flock of geese. Your strength was in the trees, growing taller every day Your smile was in the sun, beaming down from far away. In the sparrows you left curiosity, always seeming to ask us why. And the hills held your ambition, reaching upwards towards the sky. So even though you are now gone, your soul will never be, for I take it everywhere I go, it is wild and it is free." Written by Valerie Hein, on November 1, 2011. In memory of Benjamin Thomas Hein and Scott Thomas Peterson. Peace and love, Valerie | 4/20/12 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 7 | VideoNamaste Yoga 123: Ganesh's Cat and the Teachings of Interconnection | http://www.melissawest.com One day, as a child, Ganesh amused himself by tormenting his pet cat, pulling on her tail, rolling her up and down. After a few minutes of amusing himself, he left the cat and went away. He didn't give too much thought to what he had done to the cat and went to meet his mother, Parvarti. Ganesh was surprised to find to find Parvarti suffering badly in the dust with many wounds. When he asked his mother what had happened, Parvarti responded that Ganesh was responsible for her bruises and scrapes. You see, all is one and Parvarti is indeed the cat that was tormented by Ganesh. The story teaches us of the interconnection of all living beings. If we injure any living being we injure every living being. In this class we will focus on the one of the primary teachings of yoga, the interconnection between all things, or in other words, the philosophy that all is one. Starting in our own bodies we will experience the connection between the layers of our koshas from physical, breath, emotional, mental and spiritual bodies. The chakras also point to the connections between our physical bodies and our day to day interactions and existence. Physically we will of course explore cat pose in its many manifestations in this class. This video will focus on spinal flexibility through flexion, extension, lateral flexion and extension and rotation. We will also experiment with moving our spine in cat like motions in postures such as nataranjasana/dancer and 1/2 bow/dhanarasana. | 4/12/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

The first yama of yoga practice is ahimsa and this will come front and center in this practice as we will ask ourselves, How can I be more loving towards myself in this pose? Today I will be interviewing Balsam about working in partnership with nature. BIO Balsam (Sibylle Preuschat) has immersed herself in many studies, including Tantric and Daoist meditation, holistic wellness, the use of flower essences and essential oils, and improvisational movement. Her debut CD, recorded with percussionist Alfredo Villela, is called Feel the Love, Get the Respect: From Nature, For You, With Music. This CD joins together Balsam's two greatest passions: singing and sharing strategies for collaborative, conscious, mutually beneficial partnership between humans and natural/physical/biological intelligence. Balsam is an experienced workshop facilitator, teacher, and consultant who has witnessed again and again with her clients that when human souls learn how to consciously seek out and receive the support and wisdom inherent in natural/physical/bodily intelligence, their creativity and power on the Earth plane flourishes. The Feel the Love, Get the Respect CD gives every interested listener an opportunity to directly connect with the support, love, and respect held in their personal body intelligence and physical reality in general, while supported by music composed especially to enhance this connection process. | 27 | VideoNamaste Yoga 105 Yoga of Emotions Wonder with Dr. Melissa West | http://www.melissawest.com This episode shows an exciting gateway into dropping the over-rationalizing egoic mind, suspending "reason" and entering into wonder. In this episode we will open up to the wonder and miracle of life. We begin by bringing awareness to our breath, the very thing which brings us life without even consciously being aware of it. Not only that, but your breath spreads prana (life-force energy) through all the 72, 000 nadis of your body. That awareness alone can drop you into the emotion of wonder. Tuning into the miracles of life such as the birth of a baby and creation itself we will explore some of the various depictions of Brahma (the God of creation) through fish and tortoise poses. Wonder is rajasic and heats our internal fire so we will also explore postures and breath practices to stoke our internal fire. It connects the functions of your nerves, veins, muscles, joints and circulate nutrients and energy .Vyana vayu moves from the center to the periphery. Hatha yoga and its endless yoga postures are fabulous for enhancing the flow of prana through vyana vayu and ultimately your circulatory system, lymph system, and nervous system. | 42 | VideoNamaste Yoga 91 Yoga Story Bhujangasana Cobra with Dr. Melissa West | http://www.melissawest.com Another story of rebirth and regeneration! (Has this been a theme in the yoga stories series?) The cobra is said to be a symbol of relinquishing our fears as we progress on the spiritual path. Shiva wears a cobra around his neck symbolizing his deep familiarity with the fear of death (he is the God of destruction after all). His son, Ganesh, wears a snake around his belly, not only to cinch in his waist (because he eats too many sweets) but also to pay respect to his father and dedication to overcoming his fears. | 50 | VideoNamaste Yoga 83 Yoga Stories Lord of the Fish with Dr. Melissa West | This week's yoga story has to do with fish pose in yoga. There are two versions of fish pose: matsyana, which is the back bending fish, and matsyendrasana, the seated twist. Matsya was the first avatar of Vishnu who saved the great sages, birds, animals and plants from a flood that destroyed the world. Matsyandrasana was the first yoga teacher, a fish who Siva unknowingly imparted all the teachings of yoga one day while sitting by the water's edge. Matsyendrasana went on to teach others and the classic text Hatha Yoga Pradipika was the result. This class will free up your thoracic spine for fish pose and then work with twisting which is fabulous for your internal organs and releasing tension. | 5/25/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

By discovering the stories of Hindu Goddesses Lakshmi, Parvati, Annapurna, Saraswati, Kali and Durga we discover the personal, archetypal qualities of the Goddess that exist within all of us. This class is not only for women. Hatha yoga translates as ha = sun, tha = moon. Sun is the masculine, moon is the feminine. We practice yoga to balance our masculine and feminine sides in union. | 54 | VideoNamaste Yoga 79 Dharma with Dr. Melissa West | This week's class is about dharma: right action and living your truth. Dharma often gets translated as life purpose but I think in our culture that gets read rather narrow mindedly as "career." Dharma is about the fullest expression of our being, about living the fullness of your uniqueness and passions. What's more we have multiple dharmas at multiple times during our lives. In this class we will practice yoga asana as a way to be more fully you in each posture. We will draw on the story of the Bhagavad Gita and Arjuna's quest to live his truth as our inspiration. ; | 4/28/11 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 55 | VideoNamaste Yoga 78 Karma with Dr. Melissa West | This is the much requested and long awaited class on karma. Although karma is popularly understood as punishment for our sins or rewards for our good deeds, in truth it is much more complex than that. Michael Stone describes karma as a relationship between our actions and psychological conditioning. He adds that when we act we act within a web of relationships and thus karma is a complex and multidimensional thing. This class is really a part 2 to the class on samskaras (episode 77). Karma can relate to the actions of our bodies, minds and speech. In this class we focus on the habitual holding patterns of our bodies and plant the seeds for a new more flexible, strong, and balanced way of being in the world. ; | 4/19/11 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 56 | VideoNamaste Yoga 77 Samskaras with Dr. Melissa West | This week's episode of Namaste Yoga is dedicated to samskaras; the subliminal impressions formed by our thoughts, feelings and actions. | 59 | VideoNamaste Yoga 74 Drishti with Dr. Melissa West | This week's class focuses on the yoga concept, "drishti." Drishti means point of focus. It is a gentle gaze outwards that brings awareness inwards. In sanskrit drishti translates as vision, point of view, intelligence and wisdom. The root of the word, "dhr" means to hold, support and keep our mind collected. How perfect is that for our yoga practice? Drishti can be on a candle flame, a chakra, a mantra, breath, bodily sensation, thoughts, emotions, or spirit. In fact in Bhakti yoga, the yoga of devotion the drishti or point of focus allows us to see past our outer differences to our inner essence or truth. In this episode we will choose different points of focus for our drishti. ; | 3/23/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Paul will join us later for two more classes to round out this practice. Kriya Hatha Yoga includes "asanas," physical postures of relaxation, "bandahs," muscular locks, and "mudras," gestures, all of which bring about greater health, peace and the awakening of the principal energy centers, the "chakras". Babaji has selected a particularly effective series of 18 postures, which are taught in stages and in pairs. One cares for the physical body not for its own sake but as a vehicle or temple of the Divine. Kriya Yoga is “Action with Awareness.” It is a means of self-knowledge, of knowing the truth of our being. The first objective of Kriya Hatha Yoga is deep physical and mental relaxation. Asana deals directly with the material part of the physical totality. The body can become purified of many disorders and irregularities by asana. The variety of asana grants flexibility and a sense of lightness and buoyancy in the body, so that gravity has less an effect on it. Ultimately the 18 asana series will awaken the energy centers along the spine and stimulate the uncurling of kundalini, our potential power and consciousness. | 8/30/10 | Free | View In iTunes |
