OPRP 060 – WooRank, Grovo and IFTTT – 10.20.11 | The Online PR Podcast with Pete Codella of Codella Marketing and Mark Polson of Code Greene episode 60 addresses three very cool Internet tools: WooRank, Grovo and If this, then that. WooRank WooRank is a free search optimization measurement tool that lets you know just how well you’re doing with optimizing your site’s code and content. We highly recommend trying the tool to see how optimized your website is. Grovo Have you ever wanted to learn a little more about how to use Twitter or Google Analytics, or just about any other social media or Internet tool? Now you can for free, or less than $10 a month. Grovo delivers exceptional online tutorials for using Internet tools. It offers video tutorials you can take at your own pace, then quizzes to test your knowledge and even certifications for tests you pass with 90% or better. Grovo is a pretty slick, inexpensive application for corporate training and social media professional development. If This, Then That (ifttt) This is one of Pete’s new favorite tools. You can connect all the Web’s tools to perform automated tasks, like download photos you’re tagged in on Facebook to a Dropbox folder. The possibilities are limitless. OPRP 059 – Google Panda search updates and link building using infographics – 08.08.11 | The Online PR Podcast with Mark Polson of Code Greene and Pete Codella of Codella Marketing Episode 59 addresses the updated Google search algorithm known as Panda. Pete and Mark briefly addressed the changes in Google’s search function in Episode 57 and with this iteration of the podcast shed additional light on the benefits of using social media if you’re concerned about search placement for your products, brands, people, services, etc. Mark and Pete discuss their experience with Google search and securing top search placement using a combination of websites and social media participation. Infographics Pete and Mark also address the practice of developing infographics (see Wikipedia: Information Graphics) to help drive online traffic and be seen as a thought leader. Sharing links to an infographic using various social media platforms helps secure traffic and eyeballs on the site where you’ve published the infographic. Creating and sharing information graphics is great way to claim mind share in the marketplace of ideas for your expertise. | 8/8/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

OPRP 058 – Google+, social media revolution video update, and talk of a social media bubble – 07.05.11 | The Online PR Podcast with Pete Codella of Codella Marketing and Mark Polson of Code Greene this week addresses three topics: The launch of Google+, a competitor to Facebook The update of the social media revolution video series by Erik Qualman; and Our thoughts regarding what may be considered a social media bubble. Google+ Pete talks about his experience using Google+ and Mark discusses his impressions based on articles he has read. Overall, they agree that you shouldn’t discount the social media effort by Google, even though previous efforts (as in Wave and Buzz) have been less than spectacular. Pete points out that one thing Google has going for it is for many people, Google already houses their electronic address database. Adding a social networking element like Facebook to an existing set of Gmail contacts – where you know who your top 20 emailed contacts are, and so much more data – is easier than developing your social network from scratch on a new social media platform. But of course, Facebook has volume with some 600-million-and-counting users. Mark and Pete discuss the ability in Google+ to create circles and assign contacts to specific spheres of influence, like college, neighborhood, friends, church, etc. This functionality is nice and user friendly. For a 10 minute video overview of Google+, we recommend this video from Jason Falls. Social Media Revolution 3 The author of Socialnomics, Erik Qualman, has recently released an updated video documenting social media’s rapid growth and acceptance. You can check the video out on YouTube. A Social Media Bubble For all the talk of social media tools, there remains talk of return on investment. With recent IPOs Mark asks the question: “Are we putting too much value on social media?” Mark and Pete discuss the social media trend of these last few years and what the future may hold. We Added Music Here we are more than a year into our podcast and we’re finally adding something we’ve missed – music! Funny how we counsel others on how to create a professional podcast and are slow at taking our own advice. What can we say? We’ve been busy. We extend a special thank you to Pete’s friend, Tyler Castleton, for contributing the theme music for the Online PR Podcast. Join the Conversation What do you think? Have you already received a Google+ invite? Have you experimented with it? What are your impressions? Do you like the soundtrack used for the new Social Media Revolution 3 video? What do you think about the idea of a social media bubble? We’d love to hear from you. Image via Mashable | 7/5/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

OPRP 057 – Google’s Panda update and social IPOs – 06.15.11 | After several weeks of a hiatus from the Online PR Podcast, Mark Polson of Code Greene and Pete Codella of Codella Marketing are back! This week they address the state of the Online PR Podcast – lessons learned and rationale for continuing the podcast, Google’s Panda update to its search engine, and recent IPO news from LinkedIn along with rumors of a Facebook IPO in early 2012. About this Podcast Although it was March when the last Online PR Podcast episode was published, Pete and Mark have discussed the podcast and scheduled and re-scheduled times to record the next podcast. The good news is both of them have been so busy that is has been difficult finding time to schedule the podcast. That’s the bad news as well. Looking back, however, both Mark and Pete recognize the value of the podcast in maintaining a firm grasp on current trends and issues. They both feel that although it may take some commitment to schedule time to get together and record Online PR Podcast episodes, the time spent is well worth it. So, the good news for listeners is that we plan to continue the podcast, at least posting updates every few weeks. Google’s Panda Update Mark and Pete discussed changes they’ve seen in Google’s search performance since the company initiated its Panda Algorithm update. Before the podcast they reviewed this post on Search Engine Land that featured a Q&A with Google’s Matt Cutts, Google’s top spam cop, discussing Panda. Mark mentions the tool WooRank for identifying inbound links on your site. Social Media IPOs Pete and Mark addressed the recent LinkedIn initial public offering and rumors and speculation about Facebook’s IPO which is supposedly planned for early next year. See what Mashable reported on June 13 about Facebook’s upcoming IPO. Feedback We welcome your comments and feedback. OPRP 056 – SXSW and being careful in social media – 03.21.11 | The Online PR Podcast with Pete Codella of Codella Marketing and Mark Polson of Code Greene this week discusses some lessons learned from the South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas and a couple of recent bumps in the road for companies that have embraced social media, Aflac and Chrysler. SXSW Interactive Festival This year’s South by Southwest Interactive Festival was bigger than ever, although there has been some debate about whether or not it was better than ever. Most of what we’ve seen reads more along the lines of people realizing this is a huge trade show now, the likes of CES in Las Vegas, and SXSW, like it or not, has forever changed. Pete and Mark discuss some ways to learn from the material shared at SXSW, including visiting the conference program site and checking out SlideRocket, a new service like SlideShare. You can also view presentations on SlideShare – just search for SXSW – and search for the Twitter conversation using the hashtag: #sxsw. Being careful in social media Mark and Pete talk about the reality that the more people you involve in your company’s social media efforts, the more likely an undesired situation will arise. People make mistakes, and sometimes they post statements in social media that may not reflect appropriately on others. When these things happen, it’s important to accept responsibility, apologize and make it right if you can, and move on. The two most recent examples: Aflac A spokesperson for Aflac, Gilbert Gottfried, was fired after he made comments deemed inappropriate about the crisis in Japan on his own Twitter account. Chrysler A PR firm employee was canned after publishing a derogatory tweet about Detroit that included the F-bomb under Chrysler’s Twitter feed instead of his own. Read about these two recent situations in The New York Times. | 3/21/11 | Free | View In iTunes |
