HAIL TO HARPER

First came the cancellation of House of Commons corridor's question and answer between the press and the members of Canadian cabinet. Then came Mr. Harper’s desire to pick and choose questions from the Press Club members. Now we have podcast speeches of Honorable Prime Minister Harper with interesting names and descriptions. What is next? the suspicious burning of the Canadian Parliament and a square mustache over Mr. Harper’s upper lip?

Isn't the medium the message?

Hold on here. This is a great thing to do. Acknowledging and praising the government for taking such a progressive leap forward in its communications is not the same as endorsing their domestic or foreign policies. I would put forth the idea that committed conservatives will be less interested in reliving their favorite speeches than the determined masses of the opposition parties will be in mining them for their own political gain. Let's consider this. You're a journalist. You have an article to write by 3:00 p.m. today. You now have the collected speeches of Prime Minister Stephen Harper as a resource. If he's changed his position on a matter, or if he's stayed true to a stated goal, you can fact check him, to the letter. Moreover, you can bet your last dollar that these quotations will pop-up in more than one or two heated talk-radio programs in the coming months. This is a useful, confident, and welcome move by the government. A Podcast direct from the Prime Minister, apart from being an extraordinarily respectful nod to the politically inclined among our country's youth, can only enhance the landscape of our political discourse. Whether you're left, right, orange, red, or blue, consider the usefulness this archive will provide next election season before turning up your nose at it.

Overpriced!
